The Mann Lab is a pioneer in mass spectrometry-based proteomics. Tweets represent personal views from lab members and Matthias Mann @MPI_Biochem and @UCPH_CPR.
1/ Last week in Toronto, Matthias Mann received a 2026 Canada Gairdner International Award, shared with John Yates and Ruedi Aebersold for proteomics. What an honor! Huge thanks to the Gairdner Foundation for an unforgettable Science Week. @GairdnerAwards#GairdnerScienceWeek
2/ Three decades of mass spectrometry-based proteomics, from molecular machines to medicine. This was only possible thanks to the brilliant students, postdocs and collaborators who made it happen.🙏
3/ Thanks also to everyone who made the week special: the lectures, the student networking lunch and the gala at the ROM. Congratulations to all fellow laureates! 🎉
Yesterday, the 2026 Gairdner International Symposium brought together Gairdner laureates and leading researchers to explore how breakthrough discoveries translate into transformative therapies and shape the future of medicine.

Can MS-based proteomics see what histology can’t? We profiled 83 rare paediatric adrenocortical tumours from archival FFPE tissue & found 4 proteome-defined states that predict survival better. Now in @eBioMedicine, led by Rainer Claus & Andreas Metousis. doi.org/10.1016/j.ebiom.2026…
~8,000 proteins per tumour. The 4 states cut across histology and stratify survival more sharply, a 5-protein classifier reproduces them, and each state shows distinct candidate vulnerabilities. A foundation for proteome-informed precision therapy.
Great collaboration across clinic and lab with Rainer Claus & Michaela Kuhlen (Universitätsklinikum Augsburg), Antje Redlich (Universitätsmedizin Magdeburg), the German MET Registry & co-authors in Giessen, Kiel, Bonn & Munich.
SPARCS: Deep Visual Proteomics-style laser microdissection meets genome-wide CRISPR screening. Find genes behind how cells look, isolate them, profile them by mass spec.
Now in @CellCellPress! Tweetorial from @niklas_a_s follows🧵

Out now in @CellCellPress: ✨SPARCS✨, a
platform for discovering the genes behind complex cellular phenotypes.
SPARCS combines Al-powered image analysis with automated laser microdissection to precisely isolate cells from large mutant libraries.

400,000 citations! 🎉 Matthias Mann @labs_mann just crossed this remarkable milestone on Google Scholar. From electrospray to MaxQuant to Deep Visual Proteomics, he has shaped how the world does proteomics. Congratulations from your team! #Proteomicsscholar.google.com/citations…
That's a wrap on #HUPO2026 Singapore! 🎉 Congrats to Katherine Madden (🥇 Poster Competition), Elena Kratz (runner-up) & Kathrin Korff (Thesis Competition runner-up). And to alumni Jesper Olsen, Akhilesh Pandey & Florian Rosenberger, & to Judith Steen, on their HUPO awards! 👏
Thank you to every speaker who shared their research, every delegate and every partner.
This congress would not have been possible without you. Together, we've pushed the field of proteomics forward in ways that will echo well beyond Singapore.
See you next year in Italy!

New preprint: with ADAPT-MS, discovery plasma proteomics becomes a diagnostic tool for ovarian cancer. We separate benign from malignant adnexal masses and generalize to 5 validation cohorts. Collaboration with @ErnstLengyel@OvCa_UChicago.

At #HUPO2026? Come say hi to some of some of our labmates @labs_mann — talks & posters all week on spatial proteomics, plasma biomarkers, a human cell-type proteome atlas, interactomics & AI-driven peptide sequencing. Plenary by Matthias Mann Wed 9:00!
Proteomics analysis has always lived in its own universe. AlphaPeptTools puts it in #scverse instead, so that proteome, transcriptome & spatial data sit in one ecosystem. 11 search engines (DDA+DIA) read in, proteomics-specific statistics, #scverse native.
