My new go-to tweet. look, it is complicated, there's a lot of uncertainty and we're choosing between various bad options.

The current bias in funding agencies against some places is wild. Just had 2 reviewers use exactly the same phrase about a multi-centre trial based PhD application. Apparently it’s allowed to complain about it being ‘Cambridge-centric’. A PhD application.

Just imagine any other city (not Oxford or London) in this comment and it’s serious grounds for a discrimination case

Imagine if reviewers complained that a Newcastle-based PhD was being undertaken, shock horror, in Newcastle…

Hi Eric, there is NO description of the clinical data here. What was the situation? Pseudomonas? I assume say based on the story, but I am very interested as I can't find *any* details of this?

Alex seems to have made a mistake and posted his court mandated apology in the middle of the night, so I thought I'd help him out with a repost this morning. I'm sure he wants the most people to see it as possible.
On 19 July 2024, I published two posts on my X account in which I made allegations about Mr Mothin Ali being involved in the Harehills riots. I have accepted these were incorrect and I have jointly made a statement in open Court in order to apologise to Mr Ali and correct the record which is below. archive.org/details/JSIOC-MA…

A little over a year ago, @cremieuxrecueil shared the results of a bombshell study purporting to demonstrate that Black-White IQ differences in the United Kingdom have a largely genetic basis. In my latest article, I argue that this result is not trustworthy and challenge Crémieux to prove otherwise. 🧵 A Thread

Here is my view on what’s wrong with funding of scientific research in the UK, and how I would change the focus if it was up to me! There is a long list of things that UKRI needs to weigh when making decisions about funding for research and facilities, and driving growth is not one of them. The reason is that the whole of UKRI’s portfolio is essential for driving growth - indeed the research ecosystem is one of the necessary foundations of growth. The point I made at the Labour Conference is quite simple. UKRI’s budget is 0.65% of government expenditure, at a little under £10 Bn per year. That is a very tiny leaver when seen through the prism of attempting to use it to make a step change in economic growth - especially when the leaders of UKRI and the Research Councils are not economists and should not be economists! Their expertise lies in research. BUT, and this is the key point - if by fiddling around trying to use this tiny budget (in relative terms) to make a noticeable change in growth you damage the fundamentals, then you run the real risk of damaging the growth potential of the rest of the economy. Universities, research labs, education and inspiration are all essential for growth. This is what UKRI should be focused on because they are the custodians of this VERY valuable but fragile world-leading ecosystem. So, I would say to UKRI, do the thing you are supposed to do, do it well on behalf of the rest of the economy, and do nothing else.
Professor Brian Cox has said he was left feeling hopeful by Andy Burnham's "excellent" conference speech Speaking to @siennamarla in Liverpool, the TV physicist said it "captured some of that energy and optimism that I haven't seen for a long time" @ProfBrianCox revealed it was the first time he had attended Labour conference since 1997 – the year his former band, D:Ream, was put at the fore of the party’s election victory with its song Things Can Only Get Better politicshome.com/news/articl…

In 1980, 21% of NIH-funded principal investigators were under age 35. By 2015, this proportion was 3%. The dramatic ageing of independent scientists is bad because old people are simply worse at science than young people. Latest meta-scientific deep-dive from me 🧵 ⬇️
