Waymo just announced it's bringing robotaxis to Madrid in 2027. Here's what you need to know.
This is the new part of the story, on top of the fleet plans we covered earlier. Waymo posted on X today, Oct 20, that it's coming to Spain, starting with the Madrid region. It plans to launch fully autonomous ride-hailing there in 2027. The post got over 326K views within hours.
It will be Waymo's first region in Spain and its second in the European Union. The first EU region is Munich, Germany, which is also slated to go live in 2027. Waymo is asking people to sign up for updates at

The move was signaled months ago. On June 11, 2026, Waymo registered a Spanish entity called Waymo Iberia SL. Spain's traffic authority (DGT) also cleared Uber, WeRide and AVOMO on Sept 4 to run Level 4 autonomous vehicles under a national mobility sandbox. That sandbox is billed as the largest of its kind in Europe, and Madrid is where testing has started.
Reaction has been mixed. Madrid officials and economists welcomed it as a sign the city will embrace AI productivity gains. Others expect pushback from the taxi industry. Some posts claim a 2028 launch, but Waymo's own post says 2027. In London, Waymo is still testing with a supervisor behind the wheel.
