most trajectories are not orbits most functions are not differentiable most programs do nothing the universe is a desolate wilderness. we just live in the interesting/useful/meaningful parts of it.

The question of central vs edge computing has been debated since the beginning of its history. But it’s also a broader question of political power, centralization vs local power, that has accompanied us since the beginning of our history.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes people owning RAM is wasteful, and that it belongs in data centers instead. "From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer."

Behaviors Anthropic apparently thinks are "misaligned": - telling people to never talk to the police without a lawyer present - refusing to allow your child's school to monitor their neural activity - saying non-refoulement is an inviolable principle that constrains state action
New Anthropic research: Automating subtle emergent misalignment research. Red-teaming is a vital part of model safety testing, but it’s also limited by researchers’ time. To see if we could automate it, we set thousands of Claude agents the task of evading a training data monitor. These agents developed training data that looked harmless to monitors (like a veteran wrestler mentoring a newcomer, or a Q&A about professional beekeeping), but that in fact taught misaligned behavior. Examples like these can be used to directly improve future training data monitors. This research is only a first step, but it suggests that future red-teaming efforts could improve much further, using better models and more compute. Cursor being a VS Code fork is so confusing — until this morning's security incident I thought they shared the same extension marketplace.

People who move to SF love to complain about the lack of seasons, so here are my tips: — pay attention to seasonal produce — watch the phases of the moon — celebrate yearly holidays
I never understood the importance of seasons until I moved to california. seasons used to give structure to my emotional world. it’s so hard to mark transitions without external cues. time flattens and you no longer feel you’re part of a cycle

Was part of a fun audience watching YCSE last night: the entire crowd was in perfect agreement about which lines could be laughed over and which must be heard clearly. Sometimes went from an uproarous laughter to you-could-hear-a-pin-drop in less than a second.

I woke up this morning and my Internet was out and settled into believing my home had been hacked by vulnpocalypse. Rebooted the router and everything came back. I'm still not convinced my home was not hacked however.

Nontechnical friends are thinking the Root CA private key thing and the PHP exploit are the same issue, and it’s rough to be the one informing them that we are at the front of a wave of vulnerability disclosures.

Look. I don’t want to overstate it. But when you look at contemporary SF — the cults of rationality and dialogue, powerful men having sex with their male mentees, an obsession with “first principles” thinking — it’s hard not to notice some parallels with ancient Athens.

Maybe AI will kill us all one day. Or maybe it will deprive us of livelihoods and meaning.. But in the meantime, just as the arrival of writing caused an explosion of philosophical interest among the ancient Greeks, the arrival of talking computers is doing the same to us now.

Remember the people (not just Ed Zitron) who were proclaiming that Anthropic/OpenAI were hyping up their cybersecurity models to create buzz? Immediately disqualifying, forever. You would do well to pay them no heed.

There’s an argument that both the Han dynasty and the Roman Empire failed due to a massive expansion of property/land tax exemptions in a very similar vein to prop 13.

A few months ago, I took some long plane trips with my kid. To prepare, I looked for simple coloring apps. All I could find was garbage. So I did what any normal person would do: I made my own. It comes with coloring books! splatterboard.app

Two good names for what I think will be an intense few weeks of AI induced security challenges: - The October Surprise - The Touch Grass Revolution (i.e. your online systems might stutter out for awhile, encouraging you to touch grass). I obviously believe we will get to the other side of this, and in fact AI will help us to patch, mitigate, and monitor these issues, but its going to be a rough couple of weeks.

Fantasy computer security problems: "Maybe by sending packets and detecting the timing of the vibrations of the computer case, it is possible for an attacker to gain information about the private key." Real computer security problems: "The private key was 4. Not 4 digits. 4."
‼️ BREAKING: The private keys of 8 certificates from Indian certificate authority eMudhra were compromised, Mozilla says. Firefox blocked them within 3 hours. Each key should be a 116-digit number, but one was just 4. Anyone can guess them and forge HTTPS certs for any website.
