Defence Budget % GDP-Japan 1.4/UK 2.3 JMSDF-4xCVS/LH, 28xSSK, 8xDDG, 42xDD/FFM/DE, 40+Coastguard OPV, 21x MCMV, 5x AOE RN-2xCVF, 4xSSBN, 5xSSN, 6xDDG, 9xFF, 8xOPV 5xMCMV, 3x AO Obviously its more than just numbers, but you can't help thinking Japan does a far better job with it.

Ah it's ok who needs these, when the British Army can just re-role some Ares as an (gunless) IFV and then throw in a few Boxer's to carry the armoured brigade's infantry...
🇳🇱#Netherlands: The Dutch Ministry of Defense is continuing its extensive modernization and strengthening of its ground forces. It will procure new CV90 Mk.IV infantry fighting vehicles for approximately 1.3 billion euros from 🇸🇪BAE Systems and plans to procure 100 to 150 ACSV G5 (Armored Combat Support Vehicle) vehicles in several variants from the 🇩🇪German company FFG.

As they choose to purchase a frigate with no organic ASW capabilities, speeding up the T31 build isn't going to do much to ease the burden of the surviving T23s countering the Russian submarine fleet. It's the glacial T26 program that really needs looking at to speed up...

In what with so few RN/RFA ships at sea is a relatively rare event these days, RFA Mounts Bay and HMS Queen Elizabeth pass in the English Channel.

It seems they did some OOW manoeuvers before QE went AIS silent (or rather spoofed, as they're now showing as being in the Caribbean!)

100% this👇 Note: It's now 157 days since an operational RN SSN was at sea... #scandal
The UK was second only to the Americans in terms of submarine capabilities and presence in the Arctic until relatively recently. But arguably our boats forward deployed into seas off Russia were the most feared...and respected...of all and so formed a very effective conventional deterrent for the UK and NATO. Successive UK govts have squandered that.

Indeed... Whilst the real (but not reported) story/scandal, is that it's now 156 days since an operational RN SSN was at sea... Note: Still no news on those urgently needed ('UK built') dry docks.
Did everyone enjoy their 2 weeks of having 3 Vanguards at sea news.

It's always the tug/pilot boats AIS's that gives it away... Still least we can acknowledge and celebrate the ending of another painfully long patrol...

Looks like my post from yesterday managed to get RFA Mounts Bay back to sea! I wonder where they're off too? Now I'll have to see what I can do for getting the rest of them out...
With Tidespring arriving in Liverpool for a maintenance period & the RFA still struggling to bring Tiderace back to life, we're back to one operational tanker. RFA days in port: Tidespring-15 Tiderace- 888 Tidesurge-271 Fort Victoria-779 Cardigan-780 Mount-611(Falmouth/Portland)

Ah imagine the logic of having a plan and keeping the old aircraft in service until the new one is ready... Still I guess other than in the case of Nimrod, Harrier, Sentry, Reaper, Puma, the UK does the same...

And then we look and see what the Japanese who spent roughly 1.4% of their GDP on conventional defence can get for their money and we weep...
If one removes the nuclear estate, pensions, and intelligence services, then I believe it's about 1.6% of GDP goes on *actual* defence.
