If you farm oysters, then you could conceivably have a company that trades both in seafood with restaurants, and in pearls with jewelers. I just think that's neat

NEWS: 19 FORMER ECONOMIC AND NATIONAL SECURITY LEADERS ENDORSE THE BIPARTISAN PERMITTING REFORM BILL Today, a group of former Cabinet members and White House principals across seven Democratic and Republican administrations sent a letter calling on Congress to pass BAAJA. Here are the signatories: Janet YELLEN, Michael R. POMPEO, Steven T. MNUCHIN, Leon E. PANETTA, Timothy F. GEITHNER, Henry M. PAULSON, Jr., Robert E. RUBIN, Stephen MIRAN, Jared BERNSTEIN, Tyler GOODSPEED, Jason FURMAN, Glenn HUBBARD, Laura D’Andrea TYSON, Michael J. BOSKIN, Jeffrey ZIENTS, Jake SULLIVAN, Brian DEESE, Larry KUDLOW, Allan B. HUBBARD Key highlights from the letter: 1. “We are not building infrastructure fast enough to remain globally competitive… The median time for a new power plant to move from an interconnection request to commercial operation has more than doubled, from less than two years for projects built between 2000 and 2007 to more than four years for projects built between 2018 and 2024. 2. China has built more high-voltage transmission in the last fifteen years than the U.S. has built in all of its history... In 2024, China accounted for 31.5% of global knowledge- and technology-intensive manufacturing value added, compared with 20.7% for the United States. 3. Federally funded or permitted projects require NEPA review, but private projects often do not, creating a threat of failure precisely where the government is trying to be proactive, strategic, and engaged. 4. A project that spends years awaiting approval must continue carrying development and financing costs while remaining exposed to rising input costs. The IEA reports that prices for utility-scale transformers increased 26% in 2024, while lead times for some transformers have stretched as long as six years. 5. Mining projects also face tremendous uncertainty: a 2026 study by researchers at the Colorado School of Mines found that permitting for modern mining projects takes an average of 5.5 years, rising to 8.9 years for contested projects. The U.S. currently has the second-longest mine development timeline in the world. 6. The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act is the most significant bipartisan legislative effort that Congress has undertaken in decades to tackle these challenges. 7. BAAJA addresses key constraints stifling American industry by requiring interregional transmission planning, strengthening the federal backstop for nationally significant transmission lines, and creating a faster, more predictable process for connecting new generation to the grid. 8. BAAJA also makes permits more durable by imposing tighter timelines for litigation and limiting frivolous lawsuits that can halt projects indefinitely, while preserving community input and judicial review of substantive agency decisions.” The letter was organized by @arnabdatta321 on behalf of @IFP and covered exclusively by the WSJ this morning.

there’s something very comforting about the “it’s less of a demand problem, and more of a supply problem” model of social malaise. the people don’t want slop. they don’t like the romantasy smut. they don’t laugh at the ai generated videos. they’d rather read lit mags and watch arthouse film, and would, were it not for restricted access. lying just beneath the surface in the american public — there is a dormant desire awaiting sufficient supply. a desire for high caliber art, for cognitively demanding alternatives to scrolling.
Everyone blames screens for the decline of reading. Nobody blames the consolidated corporate publishing industry that made books pricier, more generic, and harder to find. jacobin.com/2026/10/books-pu…

For commercial photos you're looking for a certain gloss, which is hard to obtain yourself with normal food and normal camera. There are tons of tricks that pro photographers use to make food look good on camera. Some ppl would rather have a glossy monstrosity than an ugly photo
A hill I will die on: The people who do this cannot see that it's bad. There's something wrong in the vision/imagery center of ther brain, and it looks fine to them - appetizing even. There is no other explanation for this phenomenon.

It's honestly so embarrassing to see real actors weighing in on this at all. It's like if one day I tweeted "I'm gonna buy the moon lol" and NASA released an official statement like "this is an outrage"
AI-generated “actor,” Tilly Norwood talks to CNN for her first on-camera interview. How does she respond to the outrage she’s causing across Hollywood?

Slop does not come from AI, but from the heart of man. AI only reveals the slop that is already in the heart of man. What man desires is slop. The problem is with man, not the machines.

One SPR fact that is still too underappreciated: DOE is going to be refilling the SPR with approximately 150-160mm barrels (because Trump conducted exchanges for 133mm bbl, not releases). It takes longer to fill than it does to drain so the refill will likely run through at least 2029. So any fanciful ideas about "refilling with Venezuelan oil" are simply not possible. Refill capacity is likely to be taken up for the next 3-4 years.

People tell me they like suits but dont have occasions to wear one. You can wear a suit to court, funerals, and religious services. Doesn't have to be your trial, friend's burial, or religion you believe in. Go to random trials, attend a stranger's burial, join multiple religions

This thread is fun because its full of people who absolutely did not understand what "straight man" meant in this context, but because its social media, they're digging in rather than bowing out. They just have very strong, very valid feelings about Acting
He’s not complaining about not getting to play straight characters YOU IDIOTS. In comedy, “straight-man” is the normal one in the sketch, the only one who lives in the same reality as the audience.

I get that "accounting" for it in an economic sense is something different, but I think the real answer is kinda easy - if you ask basically anyone in the country, including you or me, "Broadly, do you feel good about the way things are looking?" you'll get a negative response
No one even tries to explain how to account for rock bottom sentiment and a stronger than expected labor market anymore

It reminds me of the way HR people talk about job applicants. What are the good niche job boards, what kind of language do candidates respond to, etc etc. Just look inward. You've applied for a job before. Job candidates aren't some strange species - they're us. We're them.
