Father who killed
#SilverRailElementary school shooter
#GriffinJohn grapples with the aftermath.
#KaylubGiamanco woke up, got his two girls ready for picture day at Silver Rail Elementary, dropped them off, and headed to work like any other Thursday.
He almost ate the lunch packed in his truck. He almost stopped for errands. He almost never turned onto the road that runs along the school.
Instead he saw a 16-year-old with a shotgun, followed him in, and stopped him inside a special education classroom after the shooter had already killed three children (ages 5, 8 and 11) and a 25-year-old teacher.
“I said, ‘I’m sorry, I have to go in. People are going to die.’”
He army-crawled toward the sound of kids pleading, saw a teacher struggling with the shooter, and fired. Then he shot twice more so the shooter couldn’t reach for his weapon again.
Police credit him with saving many more lives at a school of over 400 kids. He keeps replaying it. He still wants to apologize to the families of the ones he couldn’t reach in time.
“I didn’t save everybody. I didn’t get them all.”
He’s just a carpenter from Bend who grew up as the oldest of seven, once used a makeshift tourniquet to save his brother’s life, and got informal training from Iraq veterans. The gun in his console had mostly been collecting dust.
He’s not interested in turning this into a political fight. He just keeps saying he wants kids to know they have people standing behind them.
Some people spend their whole lives wanting to change the world and never get the chance. He got the chance in the worst possible way and took it.
