USDA finally added the #H5N1#BirdFlu infected herds I'd heard about (2 weeks ago) to its list, bringing CA's total to 754; 983 across 17 states. Meanwhile domestic cats are getting pummeled -- APHIS' list shows last 10 entries were all cats.
FWIW, signs of #H5N1#BirdFlu in CA's wastewater is pretty sporadic and low. So, even though I've been told there are 5 more presumptive #H5N1#BirdFlu dairy herds in CA (total=753), things don't seem as hot as they did a month or two ago.
CDC confirms CA child's #H5N1 case. Per press release: "55 human cases of H5 bird flu have now been reported in the United States during 2024, with 29 in California." CDC website does not reflect this. Anyone know what the other CA case is?? (My count is 28 human in CA, 54 total)
In case any one is counting: We're at 41 cases of human acquired #H5N1, per CDC; 17 in CA (all dairy workers). Nationwide, 21 from cattle, 19 from poultry and 1 unknown.
Ooof. Count is now 178 positive #H5N1 herds in CA. 380 herds across 14 states since March. And Turlock's wastewater is climbing (see line graph) for H5 (also a new wastewater hit in SE SF). #wastewaterscan
It's been a few days, but the #H5N1 cases are still rising in CA -- both dairy and human. 105 dairy herds and 6 confirmed human workers (+5 presumptive). Here's a photo from last Thursday's drive thru Tipton:
Procrastinating while writing, I looked at my stats on Audible. I can't decide if listening to books for a grand total of 4 months, 20 days, 17 hours and 19 minutes over the past 10 years was time wasted -- or not enough.
What has so deeply resonated with Godzilla Minus One audiences? The horror behind the horror? The real and true trauma of war and annihilation? Come see me and others at #wondercon and #WC2024/ Anaheim.
I'm walking out today (remotely) with my colleagues at the LA Times. Management is threatening to eviscerate our newsroom in a manner that can only be described opaque, callous and cruel; with little concern about the communities and we serve. We all deserve better.
Struggling with climate depression? The dread of watching catastrophe after catastrophe can be overwhelming. I started a worm farm. Composting kitchen waste, feeding living creatures, and creating fertilizer for my garden has provided a small solace. What do you do?

#plastics ballot petitioners say they will drop the ballot if state legislators adopt #SB54. They warn that the legislation could fail even if implemented. Here's their letter:
Enviro groups, @NRDC@SCCAZeroWaste@cawrecycles , out against SB54. "California can not afford to put all of our eggs into the basket of an
industry-run organization that, by its nature, will not act in the public interest."
#LACounty just passed #plastics ordinance. Take out foodware must be compostable or recyclable; no more polystyrene; and if you're dining in, all tableware must be reusable.
