Windrowing on time maximises income, avoiding losses due to windrowing canola too early. Crops should be windrowed when 60โ€“80% of seed sampled from the middle 3rd of main stem and branches has changed colour from green to red, brown or black. This guide will help growers decide on the best time to windrow their crop. ๐Ÿ”— Read the full guide and order a printed version: bit.ly/4jzFDsS #GRDCPublication #Canola #Windrowing

๐Ÿšœ A well set-up header can capture 50 to 80% of weed seed at harvest, making setup one of the most effective, lowest-cost tools growers have against herbicide resistance. The latest Paddock Practice covers rotor and concave settings, checking losses with drop trays, fan speed, baffles and getting harvest weed seed control equipment set up before harvest. It also looks at weeds that retain seed well at harvest, including annual ryegrass, wild radish, brome grass and wild oat. ๐Ÿ”— Read more: bit.ly/4yiOnZ0 #GRDCPublication #WeedManagementInitiative #HarvestWeedSeedControl #IWM #WeedManagement

๐Ÿšœ There's nothing quite like seeing a system working in the paddock. Great Southern WA growers recently completed a GRDC-supported study tour through Tasmania and Victoria, exploring surface and subsurface drainage systems. Visits to farms, research sites and drainage installations provided practical insights into design, landforming, machinery, maintenance and water management. A key takeaway was the confidence gained in WA's progress, with Great Southern growers helping lead innovation in broadacre subsurface drainage. #GRDC #GRDCStudyTour #FarmDrainage #AustralianGrains

๐ŸŒฑ Why do crops respond differently to the same management decisions from one season to the next? It's a question driving @CSIRO Crop Systems Researcher James Manson, who is interested in understanding the crop processes and environmental conditions behind those differences. In case you missed it, James explores the science behind seasonal variability and crop performance in GRDC In Conversation, hosted by @humans_of_ag. ๐ŸŽง grdc.com.au/news-and-media/aโ€ฆ #GRDCPodcast #GRDCInConversation #HumansOfAgriculture #CropResearch

๐Ÿ”ฅ Surviving a life-threatening harvest fire gave WA grower Tim Haslam a second chance, and he's using it to raise farm safety awareness. After suffering burns to more than 30% of his body, Tim has been sharing his experience with young people preparing to enter agriculture, including a presentation to around 180 agricultural students. The Farm Safety Series is led by @AgCommunicators with @FarmerHealth and @ifarmwell_, part of Adelaide University. ๐Ÿ“น bit.ly/4zizSEz #GRDCVideo #FarmSafety

๐ŸŒพ International Day of Rural Women recognises the women contributing across farms, agricultural businesses and rural communities. GRDC Chair Sharon Starick was recently named South Australiaโ€™s Women in Agriculture winner at the Australian Agriculture Awards. A farmer at Punthari on the Murray Plains, Sharon has also spent years contributing beyond the farmgate and encouraging more women into agricultural leadership. Sheโ€™ll represent SA at the national awards in Canberra on 19 November. ๐Ÿ”— bit.ly/4hL4oBi #GRDC #InternationalDayOfRuralWomen #WomenInAgriculture #WomenInAg #AustralianAgriculture

๐ŸŒพ ARE YOU LEAVING GRAIN BEHIND? One key takeaway from the recent @theGRDC Harvester Set-Up Workshops was the importance of measuring harvest losses & making the right adjustments to improve efficiency. Now itโ€™s time to put that knowledge into practice! @FaceyGroup has Harvest Loss Drop Trays available to hire โ€“ FREE for members! A simple, practical way to measure how much grain is being lost behind your harvester, fine-tune your machine settings & keep more grain in the bin. Don't guess your losses โ€“ measure them! ๐Ÿ‘‰ Find out more or enquire about hiring our drop trays: faceygroup.org.au/harvest-loโ€ฆ Measure it. Adjust it. ๐ŸŒ For WA grower Kieran Allison, post-harvest grain cleaning is another tool for managing snail contamination. Larger snails and other admixture are screened out, while grain passes through rollers set at about 1.2 mm to crush smaller snails similar in size to canola seed. The work forms part of a broader GRDC investment with Adelaide University to improve year-round snail management. ๐Ÿ“น bit.ly/4APPktE #GRDCVideo #SnailManagement #GrainQuality #CropProtection
