Director & Cinematographer. “menswear guy of cinematic lighting”

Los Angeles, CA
Here’s some of what I’ve made recently! The letters on the bottom indicate if I was the Director (D), Cinematographer (C), or both (DC). I specialize in colorful imagery that showcases diverse voices across fiction, documentary, reality, music video, and commercial.

No, you’re not crazy! Night scenes DO LOOK darker now than they did in the decades prior. But it’s not because cinematographers refuse to light their scenes (common misconception). It’s because the STYLE of lighting has changed. Let me explain. 🧵

Oh I know! First let’s talk about the lights. They’ve got an array of 5 circular trusses. These contain moving beam lights (yellow), moving wash lights (green), followspots on the 3rd/4th rings (purple), and some sort of multi-diode panels or tubes on the outer ring (red). 🧵
why does everyone always look so damn good on this french show

Every year, this gala has some of the best lighting of any event, but the background ... While better than a generic step-and-repeat, a curtain doesn’t have the same grandeur as the Met Gala steps. I wonder why they don’t showcase the museum’s Death Star architecture instead.

A no-nonsense bodyguard (Leighton Meester) is hired to protect a charming action star (Jared Padalecki) over the holidays. Falling for him? That's where things get complicated. GUARDING STARS, based on Katherine Center’s bestselling novel The Bodyguard, premieres November 18.

An update to this thread I've been neglecting. Shot three Savage x Fenty campaigns and here's some stills from the first one!

Tech dudes do not understand the purpose of art or why people enjoy it
I am not joking when I say this. Spotify, Apple Music, and streaming in general is over. AI music is now very, very good. You just don't know yet because all AI music circulating today is from ~2-3 generations ago. Suno v6 pro et al has solved infinite personalized music.

Tip: try to be as thorough in your location as possible, because that’s how I search the database. Ex: if you live in San Jose but operate throughout the Bay Area, add all the cities you operate in. Or if you live in DC, write “Washington DC” “Maryland” etc and not just “DMV”

What stands out here is the locked-off camera. In a typical documentary, you don't know where your subject will be so the camera inevitably has to move with them. Here, the shots seem pre-composed in a "okay now walk over to the window" or "scoot to your left a bit" type of way.

Fascinating. I love Nathan Fielder and as always, I'm curious about how it all works. How does he plan his shots? How does he divide his attention between being the architect and the subject? Does he stage stuff? Does he do re-takes? Who is his crew? What's their schedule?

What's happening here is a color technique called Split Toning, which has become more popular in the last couple of years. It has to do with the Color Grading process that footage goes through in post-production. 🧵

I NEED a professional to tell me why everything looks like this now. It was the same problem with Wicked and a million other recent movies. WHAT is going on here?? And why so much backlighting??????

It's not "everything" that looks like this - it's just a trend that is dictated by execs who are afraid to let things fall to shadow, or for light to be too harsh. If you want the opposite of this, look to Heated Rivalry:
Let’s talk about the lighting in Heated Rivalry and why it stands out among a lot of shows/movies in the romance genre. #heatedrivalry #cinematography
