What happens when AI literacy becomes something you have to prove, not simply claim?
AI adoption is accelerating faster than verified human capability. Corporate AI adoption has risen from around 20% in 2017 to 96% in 2026, yet 41% of businesses still struggle to demonstrate the value of their AI investments, while more than 70% of professionals lack foundational AI understanding.
The problem is not that we lack AI courses or certificates. We have thousands of them.
The problem is that most credentials still tell us that someone attended, completed or paid for a programme. They rarely tell an employer, university or government what that person can actually do with AI, where their capability gaps remain, or whether the credential itself can be independently verified.
This is why I created the AI ID Passport™ around a different principle: certification should follow demonstrated readiness, not seat time.
At its core is the AI Readiness Wheel™, measuring capability across ten interconnected domains, from strategy and infrastructure to responsible AI, regulation, cybersecurity, sustainability and workforce transformation. Progress is measured against a baseline and reassessed over time rather than reduced to a simple pass/fail certificate.
The credential itself is designed to be blockchain-verifiable, privacy-preserving and independently checkable, carrying competency-level information rather than a single generic certificate. But verification alone is not enough. The real value comes from combining verifiable credentials with rigorous assessment of actual capability.
As AI becomes embedded across education, business and government, the strategic question will increasingly become:
How do we know who is genuinely ready to use AI responsibly, safely and effectively?
In my latest Businessabc article, I explain why we need an AI ID Passport, how the AI Readiness Wheel works, and why the future of AI education must move from attendance to measurable capability:

“There's around 𝟑 𝐭𝐨 𝟒 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞, but the biggest challenge is that the conventional jobs are going to disappear. So, how you create stability around that, and how you create a steady revenue stream that allows you to create a strong financial security, and a wealth of capacities for you to keep living and doing the things you love.”
Smart Business Designs is a London-based business strategy and consulting firm that specialises in helping creative entrepreneurs build commercially sustainable businesses by strengthening the strategic, operational, and organisational foundations behind their work.
“There's still that element of ‘oh, I don't want AI to take away my creative spark’. AI hasn't been explained the right way. Everyone has to learn it. AI giants #OpenAI and #Anthropic's leaders are reportedly planning fallout scenarios for a potential "catastrophic event"
AI is advancing at a remarkable pace, but what happens if that progress comes at a catastrophic cost? According to a recent report by Axios, OpenAI, Anthropic, and major tech companies are privately preparing for a potential Artificial Intelligence-related "catastrophic event" (in the next 6-12 months), which could put the entire industry under intense scrutiny.
