Last week we hosted an experts’ workshop, “Women, Peace and Security in India: An Inclusive Agenda”, supported by @GermanyinIndia. We started the conversation by identifying the many women of WPS in India: women who live with various insecurities, serve in uniform, practice law, report from conflict zones, and shape policy. The workshop asked four questions: Who are the “women” of WPS? What kinds of insecurity can WPS in India address? What does “peace” mean, and to whom? And what would an inclusive WPS framework for India look like? 🚨PUBLICATION ALERT🚨 Delighted to release our third report in a series of five from our joint project with @DefenceUwa on 'Enhancing Australia-India Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA) Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific'. 🔗tinyurl.com/y86rbbwd 🔺This report examines the development of uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) in 🇦🇺 & 🇮🇳 & the case for bilateral cooperation in the undersea domain. 🔺The authors, RAdm Puneet Chadha (Retd) & @FathomsOne argue that the two national ecosystems are complementary rather than competitive, & that a phased, capability-driven partnership that begins with benign & civil applications is more likely to endure than early collaboration in sensitive undersea warfare technologies. 🔺The authors propose a framework built on four concurrent pillars: operational cooperation, technological collaboration, industrial partnership, & institutional coordination. By the time we sort out surface awareness, the ground beneath us will have shifted." 🌊 At the recent 2-day regional experts' workshop on Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness by @CSDR_India (CSDR) Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness in partnership with @NIAS_India (NIAS) and the @AsiaPacificFdn—MRC Founder & Director @Arnab_UDA shared key insights during Session 5: 🎙️ “Evolution and the Status of Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA) in the New Global Order” Conventional MDA—shaped largely by surface surveillance—must transition toward an integrated underwater governance framework: Key insights from MRC’s address: 🔹 Tropical Waters Demand Tropical Solutions: Standardized acoustic models and URN limits built for temperate Western waters cannot simply be transplanted into tropical Indo-Pacific seas. Localized acoustic modeling and regional regulations are essential. 🔹 From Military Security to the Greater Public Good: In a multipolar world, UDA must serve SIDS, marine ecology, biofouling mitigation, disaster resilience, and seabed cable security alongside defense. 🔹 Solutions Over Products: Hardware ("To See") is incomplete without ambient noise analytics ("To Understand") and real-time decision support systems ("To Share"). 🔹 Traditional Knowledge Meets Modern Science: Bridging AI analytics with coastal wisdom via M&S-based Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) toolkits. Last week, we participated in the “Maritime Domain Awareness in the Indo-Pacific” workshop, jointly organised by @CSDR_India and @NIAS_India, in Bengaluru. Today, countries define MDA (Maritime Domain Awareness) differently, prioritize different threats, and operate largely separate information-sharing architectures. This workshop brought together several participants from across South Asia, Southeast Asia, members of India's strategic community, and others in one place. The key focus was on mapping how our countries actually approach MDA, identifying where the gaps lie, and finding concrete opportunities for collaboration. Having a seat at this table allowed us to understand the perspective of multiple nations on MDA’s future from close quarters and how we can help accelerate that with our sovereign SAR systems. We would like to thank the panelists and organisers, @CSDR_India, @NIAS_India, and @TakshashilaInst, for inviting us to the event and hosting such a meaningful exchange.
