Excerpts from my recent FAD Magazine interview that details Concerning Unknown Women, a site-specific commission for Museum PARCUM in Belgium, opening this Friday.
The museum invited me to engage with their historic archive of poems written for women entering religious life. I was dismayed to discover that the poems were essentially the same poem—praising the women for becoming brides of Jesus and living lives of devotion, renunciation and obedience. We often blame AI and algorithms as flattening forces, but humans have been flattening narratives for centuries.
My project takes 106 women from the archives and visualizes them through the language of Flemish portraiture—with a twist. They're *doing* something instead of posing or having something done to them.
Thank you to
@titlesxyz for being the best tech partner.
My installation includes an imagined museum website that houses—and thus canonizes—these portraits. The site can be visited via link below. If it looks familiar, it’s because I modeled it after the very institutional, very boring Frick Collection site.
More to come.
