A new National Care Service. Greater public control of water, energy, and housing. A National Commission on Electoral Reform. Strengthening our relationship with Europe. Reforming the education and welfare system. Today I set out a different path for Britain. You may disagree with some or all of what I have said today. But I have given you what you often say is missing from politics. Honesty, ideas and a clear direction for the country we all love. If you agree with enough of what I have said, get behind this plan. And get behind each other. It's time to draw a line. To move beyond a decade of drift and division. To bring a spirit of unity and positivity back to our country. To unlock the working-class aspiration that is still there in every postcode. To hope again.

At last. Clause 1 Equality Act now to come into force. All inequality is abhorrent whether based on sex, race, disability, age, LGBT…. or class. 16 years since I wrote Clause 1 “socio-economic” duty. But less than 16 weeks since @andyburnham became PM 👏👏👏👏

Why are women victims of domestic abuse, who have offended when in the grip of their abuser, not being given early prison release, when domestic abuse perpetrators are??
"We really should look at letting some women out." Dame Vera Baird, Chair of the Criminal Cases Review Commission, says that women should be prioritised in the government's considerations over early prison releases.  #Newsnight

Some people put their ideas out in the world and hope they catch on. Not Gloria Steinem. Through her writing, her speeches, and her organizing, she demanded that the world pay attention to all the ways that women had been — and in some cases, still are — treated unfairly. And she helped awaken us to problems like domestic violence, the lack of affordable child care, and unfair hiring practices that had too often been ignored or overlooked. Gloria really was larger than life. Today, generations of women are walking a little taller and aiming a little higher because of what she fought for and achieved. Michelle and I are thinking of her family today, and everyone — women and men — who were inspired by her towering example.

"Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It's about baking a new pie." -- Gloria Steinem, 1934-2026
