As explained here by Eric, the Patterson case could be the next lawsuit against the NCAA that results in a billions of dollars in damages. The House settlement contained $2.8B in back pay damages.
Patterson is a big one in the world of eligibility cases- potentially billions (with a B) of dollars at stake. Trial is set for over 2 years away, but there’s not the same urgency as in most other eligibility cases. That’s because Patterson is no longer seeking extra seasons for the plaintiffs, it now seeks only damages. In other words, the money athletes claim they lost out on because they were denied additional seasons under NCAA rules. Patterson is a class action for potentially thousands of athletes who played from 2020 onward, so IF (big if) the case actually makes it to trial and the athletes win, the award could be enormous.

This is new for college sports, but it’s common in pro sports (which high level college sports are) for mid-season contract discussions to happen. The way to avoid some of these conversations is multi-yr contracts. Those happen via incentivizing players to sign them or a CBA.
“I talked to a college coach this week, who's got a bye week next week, and all he's doing is meeting with agents. It's the middle of the season!” - Nick Saban 🤔

Courts aren’t the only ones ruling class of 2021 athletes who have played four seasons of college basketball, and redshirted an additional season, eligible. The NCAA just did the same thing.
BREAKING: The NCAA has ruled Clemson G Mia Moore eligible for a sixth season, @ClemsonTigerNet has learned. Moore, an All-ACC selection last spring, provides a major boost to a team looking to get back to the postseason in consecutive seasons. Major news for Shawn Poppie.

COLUMN: Why is the NCAA fighting these so-called five-for-five cases all over the country in ways that will absolutely create an uneven playing field this season? Arizona's Tommy Lloyd has an interesting theory. cbssports.com/college-basket…

Robbie Avila was granted a TRO by a Missouri state court in his 5 in 5 lawsuit vs the NCAA. He’s currently eligible to play in 2026-27. The court’s order allows SLU to exceed the House settlement’s roster limit to add Avila. It cited other teams that are over the limit.
Breaking: A St. Louis Judge has granted Robbie Avila a temporary restraining order allowing him to play college basketball, at least for 15 days. Also allows SLU to roster him. He’s back in court on the November 4th, SLU plays Mizzou on the 6th. @kmoxnews @kmoxnews

The PCSA was drafted to maintain current conferences & prevent formation of a college 🏈 super league. But in a twist of irony, the push for the bill may have done the opposite. Schools are becoming more biz savvy with athletic programs and independence is an option for some.
NEW: If independence works for Miami, it would also work for a lot of other schools, via @AndyStaples👀 "If Miami can find a way to financially exceed what it makes in the ACC by going independent, there probably are another 20-30 schools that also could." Story: on3.com/news/if-independence…

As expressed by Providence’s AD, the NCAA’s failure to implement the new eligibility rule in a common sense manner, and to include the class of 2022, has led to a college basketball season where court orders are setting rosters. Could have easily been avoided.

Six questions that reporters should be asking Maria Cantwell about her support of the #PCSA but for the most part aren't: 1. Your views on college athlete rights have changed substantially in recent years from once seeming to support athletes' free economic rights to now desiring to curb them. Who influenced you to change your thinking on this matter? (The 'who' is what matters). 2. @achristovichh ran a story online today about a new college sports Super PAC that has targeted Congresspeople. Has anyone with that Super PAC, or with otherwise similar interests who may run in similar circles, spoken to you? 3. In a similar vein, have you spoken with anyone from the Knight Commission, and if so who? If you have, who did they claim to represent? And, what were their talking points? 4. @DionneKoller was your No. 1 choice to testify before Congress on college sports issues in 2020. She strongly opposes this bill. Why don't you still trust Dionne's guidance? 5. @RulingSports also states having publicly spoken to your staff and opposed the bill. Yet, you disagree with her too. Why isn't her guidance compelling? 6. To the extent you believe this bill is good for female athletes, what does it mean to you that so many well-known, female sports law professors including @DionneKoller, @RulingSports, @ammoorman, @NellieDrew1 all publicly oppose the bill? If that's not probative of anything to you, why not?
