I’m gonna say something, but you have to lean in close because I can only whisper it. I liked the movie North. That was the film about which Ebert famously said: “I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it.” I was a kid when it came out and I absolutely loved it. Maybe Ebert just wasn’t the target audience. I rewatched it recently and I thought some of the jokes were hilarious and the end was genuinely moving. I’ve never seen anyone else defend this much maligned film, so I figured I would go on the record as a fan.
