Only 28% of New Zealanders now view the United States as a friend, according to a new poll by the Asia NZ Foundation. That figure was 61% in 2024.
Perceptions of China have fallen significantly too, with just 23% of Kiwis viewing China as a friend, down from 43% in early 2026.

The New Zealand Air Force with U.S.-provided aircraft find three lost at sea.
A Royal New Zealand Air Force P-8A Poseidon crew located three people who had been missing at sea off Kiribati for four days and kept watch as a responding vessel brought them to safety.
In July 2018 New Zealand bought four Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft from the U.S. Government to support search and rescue, maritime surveillance, and disaster response across the Pacific.
This rescue shows what that investment means for Pacific communities: expert Kiwi crews using American technology to help save lives.
Keeping people safe is a shared priority. Thank you to the RNZAF crew and everyone involved in bringing these three people to safety.

Answering questions to Mai TV, Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua shut down online rumors, confirming the upcoming general election will take place strictly within its legally mandated timeframe.
Speaking in iTaukei, Tikoduadua reiterated that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces will serve in a supportive role to the Fiji Police Force, who remain the primary authority responsible for law, order, and public safety during the polling period.
