After months of work, I’m excited to share The Last Reel, my horror game set in Japan and inspired by the black-and-white rubber-hose cartoons of the 1930s. Behind the playful animation are unsettling places to explore, puzzles to unravel, monsters to escape, and chases that won’t give you much time to think. Seeing it all come together in this trailer means a lot. I’d love to hear what you think. šŸ–¤ Horror fans and content creators: interested in playing early? I Used Opus 5.5 to recreate the Harpooning Dom's Car Scene From The Fate Of The Furious 2017 in my GTA2-style game Chase Fever coming soon to Steam.

I’m creating The Last Reel, a black-and-white 2D horror adventure set in Japan, in the rubber-hose style of 1930s animation. Puzzles, deadly traps, frantic chases, and psychological horror lurk behind every welcoming smile. Wishlist on Steam (link in comment below).

Tim Sweeney gets it. AI won't replace creativity. It will remove barriers that have kept countless talented people from turning their ideas into actual games. Not everyone has the budget to hire a studio or spend years mastering every aspect of game development. AI gives more people a chance to create, but it doesn't guarantee they'll make something good. That still takes vision, creativity, and effort. The next gaming masterpiece might come from someone who could never have made a game without AI. That's the golden age Tim is talking about, and I'm all for it.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney believes AI could lead to a ā€œgolden age of gaming.ā€ He says AI could change the way games are made by helping devs with many of the repetitive and time-consuming parts of development. According to Sweeney, this could allow smaller teams to create games that would normally require much larger teams and much bigger budgets. ā€œWe’re entering a golden age of gaming.ā€ Sweeney doesnt want to replace devs and believes AI can handle more of the technical work while developers spend more time on ideas and creativity.

Unreal Engine is what got me into game deving years ago. It opened the door to a world I always dreamed of being part of since I was a kid. Without people like @TimSweeneyEpic making tools like this freely accessible, many devs like me might never have taken that first step. Let's not forget Unity's pricing controversy a few years ago, which left devs questioning their trust in the company and considering alternatives like Unreal. Tim has helped build something that allows countless people to turn their ideas into actual games. That's why you should respect his vision, even if you don't agree with him on everything. I understand that some artists fear what AI could mean for their livelihoods but disagreeing with his views on AI doesn't erase what he has built or contributed to game development. You can challenge his opinion without pretending the man knows nothing about creating.

Anti-AI artists have lost their common sense. Hate has blinded them, lol. Bro is comparing one guy to a whole studio with years of development and publisher funding. AI helped me work faster, but I’m still doing this solo, lol. Give me a team of 50 people and a $100K+ budget, then compare my game to theirs. šŸ˜‚ That said, I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, and I genuinely believe this game is better than 90% of the human-made slop on Steam.
I honestly see why your game may not compare to works like Hollow Knight, Cuphead, and maybe even Mouse: PI for hire. But I am not a game reviewer, so when those reviews come out, Id like to see if my thoughts were correct, and why AI is truly quantity over quality.

It took me four months to get this game to where it is, even with my years of game development experience. Without AI, I estimate it would’ve cost me over $50K and taken more than three years. That’s exactly why I agree with @TimSweeneyEpic about AI allowing developers to create games faster and at a lower cost. I’ve experienced it firsthand. I’m not making games for money. I have enough, lol. So threats to boycott or review-bomb it when it releases won’t stop me. Plot twist: I might even release it for free and open-source it on GitHub so anyone willing to learn can learn from it. Lmao. Coming here to bully me only proves my point about your behavior. Yes, I used AI, and there’s no shame in that. Why would I use a chisel when a power tool can get the job done faster? It doesn’t take a genius to understand that. If you want to do everything by hand, go ahead. But leave other people alone and let them choose how they create. Your opinion doesn’t give you the right to dictate everyone else’s workflow.

Every anti-AI artist I come across online is angry, swearing, and throwing insults like a badly raised kid. Their parents must be so proud. šŸ˜‚
You basically showed disrespect toward 60,000 years of art history. And fuck you ai bro's

The anti-AI crowd talks about protecting artists, then tries to sabotage a creator’s sales for disagreeing with them. That’s bullying dressed up as principle. Hard to believe it’s all about art when the response is to go after someone’s income.

I think when that game releases it's gonna be bombarded with AI hate comments and they'd be right.

I’m adding a truck-heist mission to Chase Fever inspired by the final truck chase in The Fast and the Furious. The objective is to stop a transporter and steal the sports cars it carries. I used both Astra and Opus: Astra handled the Blender while Opus handled the coding, VFX, and sound effects.

I considered adding a color mode (that can be activated/deactivated) to The Last Reel, but I feel it loses the black-and-white rubber-hose charm I love. I tested two approaches: first, I asked Astra to recolor the artwork with a pencil-like finish. For the second, it used image generation to recreate each frame and background in color while preserving the original designs. Here are the results. I still prefer black and white, what do you think? šŸ‘€

More devs need to speak up like Micah and stop letting the online ā€œAI slopā€ mob intimidate them into silence. The more creators stand openly behind their work, the less power these boycott campaigns have. This culture won’t change if everyone stays quiet.
Gamedev ON! I’m using AI. I’ll help you do it too!

I use AI to make my games, and I’m not afraid to say it. Most developer friends I know use it too, but don’t dare say so publicly because they fear harassment and boycott campaigns from the anti-AI crowd. Their silence doesn’t mean they aren’t using it. It means they’ve seen how you treat people who admit it.
Replying to @MoralzzX
Developers who are getting value from AI should speak up. There's safety in numbers. MOST developers are doing it and loving it - and if they're not talking about it it's mostly out of fear for haters attacking them, their product, and their company.

You opened by dismissing other creators as people who don’t make things or understand the craft. Now that the replies target YOUR work, it’s ā€œplease be positive and support artists.ā€ šŸ˜‚ That courtesy would’ve been useful in your first post.
Replying to @KenneyNL
Well, this got out of hand. Instead of telling me my art sucks please pour your energy instead in telling other artists' art is great. You'll feel better, and it actually helps. Tim and me agree on one thing and that's taking long hikes in nature so also consider that 🌲

Anti-AI artists have held the gaming industry hostage for years, forcing their woke agenda on players with support from the far left. In my view, games like The Last of Us Part II show exactly the direction I’m talking about. They’ve damaged the industry, and their online ā€œSLOPā€ cancel culture spreads like cancer. Anyone who disagrees with their views on AI, even Elon Musk and Tim Sweeney, is suddenly ā€œunskilled,ā€ ā€œnot an artist,ā€ or someone who ā€œdoesn’t understand craftsmanship.ā€ Guess what, now we have AI, we can create what we want without being held hostage by these same people. Boycott whatever you want. Say people using this technology can’t create, aren’t artists, or don’t understand art. Blah, blah, blah. All of it is background noise. We’ll keep building, and time will prove the point.
