A picture I took of a pond in Houston Arboretum, where I hiked last weekend. It was a gorgeous day. Houston is big and flat, but there are beautiful spots to engage with nature.
Proud to announce that our own Dr. Michelle Land from the St-Pierre lab has clinched the 1st place award for postdocs at the 2023 @WelchFoundation Conference for her poster on "Enhancing Genetically Encoded Voltage Indicators for 2P Voltage Imaging In Vivo" #PostdocAchievement".
Observing the partial solar eclipse from Houston, Texas, using pinholes on a cardboard to project an image onto my floor. The photos demonstrate that smaller pinholes gives a sharper image, as expected. #EclipseSolar#Eclipse2023
A belated reply to say I'm honored to be a recipient of the 2023 Michael E. DeBakey Excellence in Research award! Thanks to @PaulPfaffinger, Chair of @bcm_neurosci, for the support! The medal is bigger than the Nobel Prize Medal😀!
Finished teaching neuroscience methods in to our talented 1st-year grad students at @bcm_neurosci! Pictures show lab members teaching microscopy and data analysis. Big thanks to my fellow course instructors: @SynapsesInSight, @MattRasband, @AreyLab, and Elizabeth Zuniga-Sanchez.
We have some beautiful state parts around Houston! Yesterday, several lab members and I hiked and enjoyed the wildlife and vegetation at Brazos Bend State Park. Recovered lost calories at a picnic by eating BBQ chicken and asparagus expertly cooked by postdoc Alex McDonald!
We received a seed grant from the Genetic Design and Engineering Center (GDEC, gdec.rice.edu/) @RiceUniversity! GDEC will automate the development of large DNA libraries for a @CPRITTexas project. Excited to collaborate with Director Prof. Bao and Manager Dr. Gardner!
New cool kid on the block: our bright and photostable yellow fluorescent protein mGold has earned an orange flame on @Addgene, indicating its popularity! addgene.org/157996/
From last Saturday: eating crawfish and Asian food at my home with lab members, and their families & friends! We celebrated Harry's commencement earlier that day and Xiaoyu being awarded an @RiceSSPB research award last week.
Congratulations to Xiaoyu "Helen" Lu, a graduate student in my lab, for receiving the @RiceSSPB Research Award for her outstanding publication record, including her 2022 voltage imaging paper in Cell! #GEVIsdoi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2022.…
Postdoctoral fellow Dr. Michelle Land is presenting a poster on new biosensors (#GEVIs) to monitor neural activity. We're excited to be participating in the McNair symposium and grateful for support from the McNair Foundation!
At the @RODEOHOUSTON in the Founder's Suite, courtesy of Mrs. Janice McNair, whose family is funding research in my lab and the groups of other McNair scholars. Thrilling performance by the @zacbrownband. Thank you for this invitation and your support of my research program!
Congrats to @JihwanJamesLee and @MXGHarryLiu in my lab for graduating from @NSF's #iCorps program! Due to Harry and James' efforts, our team received the "Pacesetter" award for landing the largest number of interviews (150!) from the whole cohort!
Shuyuan Yang, a talented @RiceEngineering grad student working in my lab, presented an exciting poster on her work developing genetically encoded voltage indicators at the 28th Annual Neuroscience Poster session in Houston.
Congrats to Dr. Michelle Land, a talented postdoc in my lab, for receiving a travel award to ACSB! She presented her work on novel genetically encoded voltage indicators last weekend! #CellBio2022#GEVIs.
Our poster on Genetically Encoded Voltage Indicators (#496.12/YY27) is being presented #SfN22 by @Helenxiaoyu (right) and @MXGHarryLiu (left). Great collaborative work on 1P imaging with the Jaeger lab. Bonus (red section) section of 2P imaging with @DieudonneLab.
Return of the JEDI! Padawan @HelenXiaoyuLu in my lab at @bcm_neurosci is presenting a poster on JEDI-1P and JEDI-2P, genetically encoded voltage indicators for 1P and 2P imaging, respectively. Nov15 morning, #496.12/YY27, in a galaxy not far away. #GEVIs#SFN
Belated Happy Halloween from the St-Pierre lab! We had a Star Wars theme given our recent papers on JEDI voltage indicators. There was also a banana (I must have missed that episode!). See: doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2022.… and biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/….
Congratulations to Dr. Liu for successfully passing his PhD thesis defense! One picture shows Harry visibly relieved at the end of his presentation! Harry helped develop the JEDI series of #GEVIs, with the cake highlighting his transition from a Padawan to a JEDI master!
Harry Liu, a talented @RiceECE grad student working in my lab @bcm_neurosci, will be defending tomorrow (Monday) at 4pm! Please join his talk entitled "Multimodal High-Content Optimization of Neural Activity Biosensors" at Duncan Hall DCH 3092 or via Zoom: riceuniversity.zoom.us/j/962…

We finally achieved a dream I had 10 years ago: sustained (>30 min) deep-tissue (>400 um deep) imaging of fast voltage dynamics (e.g., spikes in bursts) in the brains of awake behaving mice. See our paper in *Cell* here: doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2022.…
Here are Yueyang "Eric", Zhuohe "Harry", and Xiaoyu "Helen" (left to right), the three protein engineers who developed JEDI-2P along with a stack of screening plates used to screen our voltage indicators thus far. #GEVIs#hardwork#go96wellplates
I want to thank Zhuohe "Harry" Liu from @RiceECE, Xiaoyu "Helen" Lu @RiceSSPB and @GouYueyang from @bcm_neurosci. They are co-first authors and worked in my lab to develop the two-photon screening system, and engineer and conduct detailed in vitro characterization of JEDI-2P.

We got a visit from lab alum Jack Ahrens! Jack was an undergrad from Rice U. In our lab, he worked on developing the photostable fluorescent protein #mGold using #SPOTlightScreening, see doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.abb74…. He just joined Chad Mirkin's lab @NorthwesternU as a grad student!
We're happy to welcome Dr. Matthew Shorey (pictured to the left) as a new postdoc in the St-Pierre lab @bcm_neurosci! Matt is hailing from the lab of Dr. Melissa Rolls at @PennState, where he studied the cytoskeleton and regeneration in flies and fish.
Andre "Dre" Kirunda, first-year grad student @bcm_neurosci, finished his 2-month rotation in my lab engineering voltage indicators for imaging brain activity. BCM grad students conduct 3-4 rotations to find the "right fit". Dre was outstanding -- he's a Dr. Dre in the making!
