The Well. The smell of fresh water from the falls mixed with the stink of humanity, an aroma so toxic it made my skull ring like a church bell that someone was beating with a wrench. It was going be a day. Best to face it with a little liquid courage and a few questionable life choices.
The Dame. She walked into my office like a hurricane on fire, loud, bright, and ready to burn down whatever she touched. Curves sharp enough to cut glass, red hair like a warning sign, and legs long enough to outrun my better judgement. I knew she was trouble. The kind I pretended I could handle. I’ve lied to myself before.
The Fall. She was shaking like a leaf in a heavy storm. Whatever that strange thing was, it was gone, but she collapsed into my arms anyway. I held her tight. “It’s okay, baby. I got you.” Then she kissed me. Soft, desperate, and absolutely the worst idea either of us had all day. In that moment, I knew I wasn’t just falling. I'd already hit the bottom.
The Mage. Morrow. Of course it was Morrow. If anything strange, bizarre, or just plain weird was happening around The Well, she’d be standing in the middle of it grinning like a cat who'd just swallowed a live grenade. Every time I ran into her I felt like I needed a stiff drink, a long nap, and a new outlook on life. But if I wanted answers, she was the only freakshow in town. Time to dive into the weird. Preferably without getting myself blown up.
