I'm really rattled to hear of the hideously premature death of my friend and former
@itn colleague Dermot Murnaghan, aged just 68.
I have great memories of him, not just bantering in the cafe at 200 Grays Inn Road, but also the times we spent cycling together on the annual
@DuchenneUK Dash - London-to-Paris-in-24-hours – charity ride, of which
@SkyNews was a big supporter.
Dermot was a very experienced and accomplished cyclist - lithe and quick as lightning up the hills. I'm not !
Typically, he sought to exploit that - and one year he publicly challenged me, after 300kms in 24 hours, to get back on my bike the following morning, and join him cycling back from Paris to London.
With honour at stake – and a fair amount of sponsorship money for the brilliant charity that is
@DuchenneUK – we did the gruelling return trip, entirely unsupported, joined by Dermot's then boss at Sky News John Ryley.
Typically, as John and I puffed and panted up the hills, Dermot sped off into the distance – but not so far that we couldn't hear him laughing at us as we desperately tried to keep up.
Here's to a brilliant broadcaster - and huge character.
Rest in Peace Dermot - and deepest condolences to the Murnaghan family
