I spent some time off reading some papers and thought that I could improve upon what was previously the world's fastest CRDT Introducing eg-strider: a set of improvements on top of Eg-walker that result in significantly better performance on every measurable axis jzhao.xyz/posts/eg-strider github.com/jackyzha0/eg-stri… (now featuring exclusive twitter language balls benchmark visualizations)

Matt Farley is the most prolific singer-songwriter of all time. He's written over 26,000 songs and makes $200k/year off music streaming royalties. He's also: - made 18 movies - written 5 books - been profiled by NYT and Wired He's best known as "The Poop Song Guy". I watched him perform live at "Burp. Fest" and he opened with "Diarrhea Bounce Back". "Experts have declared that Matt Farley is a genius." is something I can only say with quotes, because he tweeted it himself. I spent a week with him in suburban Massachusetts, going on a 15 mile "epic walks", attending his homeschool kids talent show, and listening to his greatest hits over 5 hours of car rides, with him pausing to explain his "genius" every other minute. I've never been more inspired by anyone. Just by being himself, he's given me more confidence in my ideas and what could come from putting them out into the world. He's independently discovered and embodied "do things that don't scale" and "ramen profitability" without reading Paul Graham. We talked about creative exhaustion from AI, how inspiration is everywhere, "reverse stealing" to promote his music before the internet, and why artists fake being sad for attention. I wrote for @sfalexandria_ on how and why he puts in such an overwhelming amount of effort into his creative process. sfalexandria.com/posts/matts…

We wrote a bit about how we updated the Agent to dynamically choose its own effort and improved its ability to hand-off work to subagents, putting us at the frontier of the cost-performance curve on DeepSWE and Terminal-Bench 4.0 replit.com/blog/free-the-mod…

The bitter lesson strikes again, turns out you should bet on the model getting smarter and making sure the harness isn't getting in the way!

TIL: glibc has weird behavior where free() does not return memory for interior free chunks back to the OS see: github.com/xroche/glibc-mall… this is fixable by doing malloc_trim(0) however, nowhere in Node, libuv, or V8 is this called! this means for Node applications that allocate/recycle Buffers really frequently, this can cause memory to leak fix: LD_PRELOAD=libjemalloc.so.2 MALLOC_CONF=abort_conf:true,background_thread:true,max_background_threads:1,narenas:2,dirty_decay_ms:250,muzzy_decay_ms:0 thanks @monkatraz

wrote a mini blog post about how Myers (the default diff algorithm for generating unified diff) degenerates on large diffs and how we can use the edit spans from a str_replace-like tool to speed up the diff calculation by a few orders of magnitude jzhao.xyz/posts/beating-myer…

its not that serious pain should not be a proxy for value. you can do worthwhile things (that are hard!) and have fun while doing them see: - The Grasshopper by Bernard Suits (excerpt below) - Schumacher's 1966 essay Buddhist Economics - Graeber's 2020 essay What’s the Point If We Can’t Have Fun?

perhaps the real tomo was the friends we made along the way congrats on the launch @justoutquan, its been 5 years since the trenches of new york but nothing has changed about justin and his love of the game. bro just wants to figure out fun, useful software for the everyday person
It's been 3 years since AI exploded, but nobody's life has improved outside of Silicon Valley. Tomo is for real humans, like my little brother Lucas and 10,000 other humans taking a chance on themselves every single day.

i spent a lot of time working with @Lambda_freak on the REPL-based evaluator harness for this benchmark! evaluating web apps against prose requirements has historically been a really hard problem and i think this contributes something novel go read the paper :) dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/37863…

this is your sign to go do a guided tour at @Lett_Arc there is just so much historic inspo from the archives it feels almost silly that more people dont know about it 1/3 - illuminated manuscripts, family trees, census results, platonic solids, euclidian shapes of the alphabet, etc.
