Day 34 building the sequel to my game Across The Multiverse. This game is a journey across fourteen universes looking for one answer, and the part I care most about is not the flying in those universes. It's the moment you arrive somewhere. So every citadel in this game opens on a cinematic, and I have been strict about what that is allowed to mean. The music starts on the first frame of the flight and lands with it. That track was written for this room. There is no transition into gameplay. The camera arrives exactly where you are standing, the black bars open, and on that same frame the room is yours. Look, walk, everything. I think immersion is paramount and i'm making a ton of effort into this direction. Music made with @suno , sound effects made with @ElevenLabs and NPC character GLB made with @MeshyAI #buildinpublic #threejs #shaders #WebGPU #webgl #gamedev #indiedev #devdiary #javascript

Day 29 building the sequel to my game Across The Multiverse. Today showoff is two of the stranger universes in the game, and the jump between them. The first one is the result of the player choosing to destroy basic physics rules. Nothing here is alive. There is no race, no voices, nobody to explain it to you. Just a web of filaments that hasn't finished burning yet. The second universe is the result of an organic hive mind colonizing an entire universe. A universe with no empty space in it at all. You are not looking at the organism. You are inside it. In the game there is already fourteen universes on the journey. I'm cooking much crazier things than these two. I have the engine to create anything and i have too much ideas. #buildinpublic #threejs #shaders #WebGPU #webgl #gamedev #indiedev #devdiary #javascript

Matt, your endless “AI made an open-world game” demos are making life harder for indie devs who actually use AI to build games. You make it look like game development is a one-day loop with no real work behind it. Then devs get called lazy, and people decide every AI-assisted game deserves a boycott. Another flashy demo gets you clicks. Does it get us a finished game? Do some manual work, fix the rough parts, and ship it. Until then, stop presenting a looping prototype like proof you’ve cracked game development.
Opus 5.5 has been looping on my open-world NYC game for almost a day now, and it's continuing to improve. Jump in and try it (it's multiplayer!): somethingbig.ai/world/

Day 25 building the sequel to my game Across The Multiverse. Today showoff is a Dyson sphere ! In this universe, the civilization here have colonized the entire universe. And to do that, they need so much energy that they use stars as energy source ! How it's built: - The structure is code, not a model. Four bands in different planes, generated from the run's own seed, so no two of these are the same sphere - Each ring orbits at its own rate, so the whole thing visibly differentially rotates instead of spinning like one rotor - The foreground bands eclipse the sun as they come around, which is most of why it reads as enormous - I used @MeshyAI MCP for the UV unwrap and the PBR pass on it too #buildinpublic #threejs #shaders #WebGPU #webgl #gamedev #indiedev #devdiary #javascript

Day 23 building the sequel to my game Across The Multiverse. The black hole is in. There was no chance I was writing one of these from scratch. There are already so many good three.js black holes out there that starting from zero would have been pure vanity. So I started from @dangreenheck WebGPU black hole instead, because his work is just excellent. Getting it into my game was the real work: — It had to be ported from WebGPU to WebGL. It was more a re-derivation rather than a translation — The light bending had to become a true geodesic. — The disk couldn't stay an infinitely thin plane, because in my game you fly THROUGH it — And it had to be cheap, so i got some work around optimization The result is mesmerizing ! #buildinpublic #threejs #shaders #WebGPU #webgl #gamedev #indiedev #devdiary #javascript #blackhole

Day 20 building the sequel to my game Across The Multiverse. The first goal in every universe is to reach the celestial citadel. You charge the vessel on dark energy until it can open a wormhole, and the wormhole takes you there. This is the whole loop in ninety seconds: the jump, the arrival, and what's inside. — The new wormhole effect, heavily inspired by what Mass Effect Andromeda does — The first of twelve celestial citadels — The first interior. One crystal nave, it is not small, and it is still the smallest and simplest citadel in the whole game — Two stones on the floor, green and red. Taking one is the only act in this game you can never take back — And at the end of the hall, a frame that opens onto another universe. HEAVILY inspired by the event horizon in Stargate SG-1 Getting close to the gameplay loop. This is the first time the whole chain runs end to end on camera. #buildinpublic #threejs #shaders #WebGPU #webgl #gamedev #indiedev #devdiary #javascript

Day 15 building the sequel to my game Across The Multiverse. You pilot an impossible vessel powered by dark energy. Here's where it's at: - Flight system rebuilt from scratch. You can turn and swing in every direction, including reversing without turning around - Hold Shift and the camera swings around the ship, so you can look anywhere while still flying where you were going - Three universes authored, each with 32 kinds of matter. Nebulae, stars in formation, galaxies and things I don't have names for yet - Ten more planned. Working on wormholes, black holes and giant events now - There are places you land, get out, walk around, and talk to the people who live there. That part already works - So: actual lore, actual story I stepped away from this for over a year. I'm back on it. Still foundations. I might have a real gameplay loop by Christmas. #buildinpublic #threejs #shaders #WebGPU #webgl #gamedev #indiedev #devdiary #javascript

If you’re not reading the code, whether explicitly or through agentic inquiry, one or more of these is true: ○ You’re a beginner ○ Software is throwaway ○ You’re prototyping ○ You have no users / revenue ○ You’re taking on debt & risk ○ Your problems are basic And btw. All of this is fine. But the reality is that models are still not at the “full autonomy” stage yet. They make rookie mistakes, they go down bad architectural paths. I just had the best model in the world add a nonsensical 700ms delay to “settle” something and it told me “you’re right, I was cargo-culting” 🤨 I am on the camp that this need will diminish more and more. Most code is indeed going to be assembly-like. But we also have the global internet and software infrastructure riding on these models and narrative, and we have to respect that.

‼️ BREAKING: An active npm supply chain attack has compromised at least 868 packages carrying over 2 billion monthly installs with a credential-stealing worm. Shai-Hulud is back. It started with the compromise of the GitHub account of the maintainer behind keyv, a library with roughly 127 million weekly npm downloads. A preinstall hook fires on npm install and drops a stealer that sweeps npm, GitHub, AWS, Kubernetes and Vault secrets, and then spreads to more maintainers.
