I'm not Jewish. I'm Belgian (with a dash of North-African DNA). And I'm a proud Zionist. Why?
Because among the world’s many nationalisms, Zionism has historically been one of the most benign, inclusive, and progressive.
Because if any people on earth has earned a country of its own after centuries of persecution and slaughter, it’s the Jews. And Israel is their historical homeland, the land from which they were driven by a long succession of conquerors and empires.
Because I have enormous admiration for Jewish cultural and intellectual achievement, and a commensurate understanding of the resentment and envy this has stirred up among the less accomplished. Without a state of their own, Jews will keep being hunted down and killed by those who hate them.
And because I can’t stand dishonesty, lies, and hypocrisy, above all the obsessive singling out of one “ethnostate” for condemnation while ignoring the two dozen far worse ones surrounding it.
Do you know why many Arab and Muslim Israelis fear being incorporated into a Palestinian state as part of a land swap in a two-state solution? Why they prefer to remain Israeli citizens? Because they have actual skin in the game, unlike all you performative "anti-Zionists".
Arab Israelis know that they enjoy more political rights and freedoms in Israel than they would in the world's 22nd Arab state, as all the previous ones have been dysmal failures.
Because even they are Zionists.
I'm not Jewish, I'm half Indian half British by ethnicity, British and Argentine by nationality and a proud Zionist. I might even convert to Judaism to defy the haters, if it weren't for the fact that I already have the coolest religion in the world.
