On October 23, a gunman killed 26-year-old Pengo Bossio Wangi and wounded five others, including a 12-year-old girl, in Trappes and neighbouring La Verrière, outside Paris. Investigators are treating the shootings as a racist terrorist attack. Since then, the debate has centred on racism, the far right, the influence of political and media rhetoric, and the suspect’s mental health. Reports indicate that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was receiving treatment. Investigators also reportedly found Mein Kampf, a Bible and a Quran at his home, along with a booby-trap involving gas canisters, wiring and a timer. Now another part of his history has emerged. @SwordOfSalomon brought attention to photographs identifying him at a 2018 pro-Palestinian event organised by the Association France Palestine Solidarité in. @Le_Figaro confirmed and excerpt reproduced here quotes local elected official Olivier Pareja confirming the photographs’ authenticity. Mediapart also reports his attendance at Palestine solidarity evenings in 2017 and 2018. None of this disproves a racist motive. Nor does attending those events establish any responsibility on the part of their organisers. A psychiatric diagnosis does not, by itself, settle the question of motive either. Kudos to @SwordOfSalomon for bringing these photographs to public attention and pursuing an identification subsequently corroborated in press reporting.

Ok let me explain. Antisemitism has always offered people an explanation for what is wrong in their lives. You are struggling, your government ignores you, the world feels unfair- and someone tells you that behind it all is Jewish money, Jewish influence, Jewish power. People often fail to recognise antisemitism because they are looking for prejudice against a vulnerable minority. But antisemites generally imagine themselves confronting a powerful enemy. They think they are exposing corruption or fighting injustice. In their own minds, they are the good guys. That helps explain why the same accusation has survived in such different political movements. Jews have been blamed for capitalism and communism, for undermining nations and for being too nationalistic. The accusations contradict each other, but they serve the same purpose: they identify Jews as the force responsible for whatever a society fears or resents. The forged Protocols of the Elders of Zion claimed that Jews controlled governments and finance for their own benefit. Henry Ford helped spread those ideas in America. Nazi propaganda blamed Jews for Germany’s economic and political disasters. These histories are different, but in each case, real grievances were turned into a story about Jewish responsibility. Now let’s get back to the ad in question. A family is shopping for food. They have to put things back because their money is going to Israel. They are then told that Israelis have healthcare that Americans are supposedly paying for too. In his accompanying post, Cenk Uygur says Israel buys politicians. The message is easy to understand: your children have less because Israelis take more, and the politicians who should help you are working for them. Of course you can oppose military aid to Israel. You can argue that the money would be better spent at home. You can investigate lobbying and political donations. Those are legitimate political arguments. But the suggestion that Americans are paying for Israelis’ healthcare is simply dropped into the conversation with a “probably.” It does not need to be demonstrated because its purpose is to reinforce a feeling: they are enjoying something that should have been yours. Older stories about Jewish conspiracy can now be recast as stories about “Zionist” power. The vocabulary changes, while the accusations of manipulation, exploitation and control remain exactly the same. People do not have to think of themselves as antisemites to absorb that story. They only have to believe that their resentment is justified and that someone has finally told them who is to blame. Recognising antisemitism requires more than looking for expressions of hatred. We also have to recognise the lies that make hatred feel entirely reasonable.

“Self-inflicted ruin is precisely what a society can expect once it has learned to settle its material questions by the reflexive accusation of Israel. In the end, it loses the faculty to reason through any sort of political or economic problems. Reality itself becomes secondary, because any fact—indeed, any operation of cause and effect—can be reinterpreted as a mask for the hidden agency of the Jews. Once it can no longer reason through and diagnose its problems, a society also loses both its will and its ability to address its problems. It cannot labor for any cause nor build anything”

This is one of the most antisemitic things I've ever seen in a political ad, and it's for Abdul El-Sayed. The message: your life is hard, groceries are expensive, and the Jewish state is why. Total madness!
This is one of the most comical ads this election cycle. Yes, Americans are chatting at the grocery store about how they can’t buy groceries because their tax dollars “go to Israel” 🙄 😂 nevermind the fact that Israel has invested 100% of military aid in the U.S. economy since Oct 7, and has also purchased over $1 billion *additional* in arms, according to DoD. Federal military aid is also prohibited from being spent on anything other than U.S. arms, so the line about healthcare is even more comical. El Sayed and his Islamist fans like Cenk Uygur want and expect American voters to be so stupid they never check. Not only is this ad insane, conspiratorial, and antisemitic — it is also flat out false. El Sayed isn’t for the people of Michigan, he isn’t even for America. He is for the Muslim Brotherhood.
