The work visa issue is causing totally unnecessary division in the Labour Party at a time when the new leader is settling himself into the job. Listening to numerous workers employed on work visas in the care sector has been essential in gaining an understanding of what they face and the effect on our public services of the proposed rule changes. All Unison wanted was to ensure the Home Secretary had the opportunity to appreciate fully the concerns of the people who will be affected by her proposals. I wrote to the Government with cross-party MPs last night opposing this decision. Rosebank and Jackdaw won’t cut bills they'll just boost profits of fossil fuel giants. If every country pursues its own deluded self interest the costs of climate breakdown will be unbearable.

Wonderful evening celebrating Dashain and the twentieth anniversary of the Hillingdon Gurkha Nepalese Association with all the usual magnificent food, music and dance with so many young people performing. Reminisced about attending the first meetings of the retired Gurkhas in Hayes, who founded the Association all those years ago and which has gone on to make such a great contribution to our local community.

This morning I welcomed to Harmondsworth village delegates to this conference bringing together volunteers and environmental experts working to improve our rivers, including many chalk streams. I have been working with local residents in West Drayton to tackle the flooding threat they face but today in talking to the West Drayton residents attending the conference we have agreed to try and launch our own project group to meet monitor and improve the quality of the local rivers in our patch and improve the riverside environment and ecology. We will be calling a local open meeting in a few weeks and will seek to work with the Environment Agency, the local council and Brunel University. It’s reported today that Sally Rooney, who many believe is one of the best authors of her generation, has been advised that because she has expressed support for Palestine Action she could be arrested if she comes to the UK. Because she is donating some of the money from the sale of her books to Palestine Action her publishers have been advised that they too could be prosecuted if they sell her books in any form and so they have removed them from the bookshelves and other outlets. I do not want anyone in the UK to miss out on her wonderful writing and so I thought I would read the first paragraphs of her terrific book “Normal People.” I hope others will read further sections of the book so that people do not lose out on the joy of reading h her works.

Great to hear the Prime Minister reference our #RightToFood campaign at #PMQs today and commit to ending child hunger in response to @JamesAsser MP. These welcome words must now be backed by urgent Government action. Our communities cannot wait. I look forward to presenting the #RightToFoodCommission report to the PM next week and working with him to implement its recommendations. The roadmap is there. Now we need the political will to deliver a Right to Food for all. Hunger is a political choice. ✊

Today I attended the launch of this important report on the impact the condition endometriosis has on women in the workplace. I raised the plight of women with endometriosis over 20 years ago in Parliament after meeting constituents struggling to secure a diagnosis, support and treatment. Many women explained the immense difficulties and lack of support they were experiencing at work. This detailed report brings home the reality so many women still face and sets out a series of improvements that could be made to transform the lives of large numbers of women at work.

I spoke today at the demonstration organised by the Palestinian Solidarity Committee. In addition to calling for firmer action against Israel by the UK government, to isolate Israel totally economically and politically I focussed on securing the release of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya and Dr Mazen al Rantisi from Israeli prisons & Fatema Rajwani from imprisonment in our country.

Visited the wonderful Grange Park primary school in Hayes this morning to discuss a whole range of issues with the school council, which comprises representatives elected by each class. I also met the pupils who form the Eco Warriors team. This group of young people,working with students from Brunel University, are reclaiming an area of the school land to create a conservation area, including making a greenhouse by recycling plastic water bottles. They aim to grow vegetables & fruits and have a quiet area where people can enjoy some calm and peace amongst flowers and trees. This such a marvellous school with a dedicated, hard working & professional staff team, backed up by many supportive parents.
