New from me in the @FT: The US needs to find a way to build data centers that works for our workers and communities. BAAJA is the beginning of a model (pass it!) but there's so much more we can do to use this growth engine to help Americans. The piece makes a few points: 1 - Data centers pose challenges (emissions, energy use, noise, etc) some of which are highly concentrated, but also economic and strategic benefits that are more diffuse. Finding a way to build them in America allows policymakers to mitigate the challenges and maximize/share the benefits. Anti-building approaches that push construction overseas (the most likely outcome if we don't build) give up our ability to do so. We should want jurisdiction over them. 2 - If you want to take clean energy tech down the cost curve, you need a reason to deploy it--i.e., new demand. Use policy to push data centers to go clean (they can afford it). It would be like the IRA on easy mode. 3 - If you want to reindustrialize and create American manufacturing jobs, use the fact that data centers are massive industrial customers and already driving an American manufacturing boom to kick it into overdrive. The FT piece cites new research I published with @SIEPR showing data centers already support 300K permanent manufacturing jobs. We should want more! The data center jobs debate that says the jobs are temporary misses upstream supply chain employment; the challenge is these jobs aren't in the communities where data centers are built. Use policy (tax credits, tariffs, permitting rules) to incentivize more domestic manufacturing and share these benefits. 4 - If you want to bring China to the table on AI safety, we need leverage. An overwhelming compute advantage helps with that, but we need to deploy compute. I'd rather race on compute than model capabilities. As I say in the piece, trying to stop data center construction as a safety measure would be like trying to solve traffic fatalities by shutting down car factories--vehicle and highway safety rules are obviously superior, do that instead! ft.com/content/a1b2bdd8-212c…

Joining the Administration hurt my relationships with many friends and family members. I do not regret a single moment of my service, nor should anyone who sacrifices their opportunities to benefit our fellow Americans. When our best and brightest serve the country, we all benefit. Efforts to “deter” patriots from joining the administration reflects a deep, cynical calculus that I find wholly alien. Hoping American policymakers fail in order to create electoral advantages disadvantages our entire republic. Disagreements over policy should not mutate into neighbors hating neighbors. I am not afraid of Slotkin. I am not even angry. I pity her. I live my life in service of greater purposes than partisan politics. Millions of Americans feel the same way. Our generation will rebuild America, and, in the process, we will drag these mutants with us into the Pax Americana.
Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking this is Trump-specific. People like Slotkin have been using every tool at their disposal to intimidate those who don’t agree with their policies when those policies can’t win on the merits for years. Saying this @UChicago, the home of unabashed freedom of inquiry and expression in higher education, is particularly tone deaf. Did anyone at UChicago or @UChiPolitics press her on this or push back at all in the room? If not, equally embarrassing day for our institutional values. UChicago should have students and alumni serving in EVERY administration. America needs you. @ThinkerChicago keep up the good work.

Cell phone addiction is an absolute thermonuke to the brain and nobody 'takes it seriously' because it is not clear that there is any solution in a world where the revealed preference of everyone across the globe, regardless of income, race, age, any factor whatsoever, would rather be on their phone than do *anything* else. Deciding "I use this too much" and meaningfully altering one's behaviour doesn't seem to have much success for any of the very small minority of people with the sentience or self-reflection to realize how bad it is. Most people seem to think of it as an unproductive habit at most, rather than an addiction. Any attempt to speak seriously about this is met with derision, accusations of pretentiousness. There is no real solution to it. The future of human cognition fifty years down the line is horrifying if you stop and think about it for even a moment.

I’m really impressed that some think tank / deep state apparatus convinced everyone on TikTok a few years ago that it’s cheaper to order out every meal than it is to just cook at home. Very underreported collective psychosis

In Ann Arbor, there is a classic cigar shop called Maison Edwards - it is a beautiful wood paneled store, founded in the 1960s, with a giant American flag hanging over the shelves. It is an incredible third space, where cool dudes of all ages have gathered to converse and talk over a cigar or pipe. I actually owe my closest friendship to time spent in that store on Friday afternoons. Now, the owner has been forced to disallow smoking in his establishment, erasing the primary reason customers go there. Too many complaints from neighboring businesses - even though no cigar smoke escaped the shop - are going to destroy this magnificent hangout place. Another space where dudes can be dudes, destroyed.

Probably the coolest thing MTS' engineering team has released, and incredibly thoughtful / great amount of intention went towards it. This is worth a click
Where do you stand on AI's biggest questions, and who agrees with you? Worldview's interview finds your position, then places you on a map of researchers, forecasters and lab leaders, built from what they've actually said on the record. worldview.mts.now

I'm hiring for someone's dream role @theacademysf: student recruitment. Here's what the person I'm looking for will do and looks like: This person will oversee our student recruitment funnels. You'll travel the world to give talks in schools and meet applicants, spend your days on the phone building trust with families, and work with our industry partners to reach their communities. Here's the archetype I see for this person: junior, extraordinarily talented, high energy, golden retriever vibes. Embodies the ethos of the school. Tech savvy enough to keep up with the extremely technical projects our applicants work on. Young people need to like you, and you need to genuinely like them. Take them seriously, treat them like peers, and be curious about what they're building. You should get excited talking to these people, not because you're trying to recruit them, but because you find them fascinating. You need to LOVE talking to people, that's 90% of the job. You also need to be comfortable traveling a lot. This is a role for a junior person (open to mid-level or senior if you're willing to be in the trenches with us!) who is extremely ambitious and capable of owning an extraordinary amount of responsibility. You'll be one of the main intermediaries between the world and our school, and for many people, their first impression of The Academy. I'm actively interviewing candidates for this. If you're interested, apply through our career page and ping me once you've submitted. If someone I know can vouch for you, you'll get on my radar even faster. If you know anyone who fits the bill, I would be extremely thankful to hear from you as well!
