Using AI to fix government | Practicing virtuous politics | 🇺🇸 📈

Introducing the US Gov Graph - a complete map of the people and positions of power in the federal government. To fix our institutions we must understand how they work, so we are using AI to model and monitor every government in America. This is Palantir for The People. Check it out here: graph.civlab.org/us We exist to set the conditions for an era of civic excellence unmatched since the Founding. We will need nothing less to navigate the age of AI. Get in losers, we're putting the whole economy into the Everything Machine
As the gap between the internal models at the AI labs and the ones they release grow (due to safety concerns & research advantages), it will be increasingly tempting for OpenAI & Anthropic to exploit that advantage directly by entering new markets, especially in finance & biotech

The PHP incident is more evidence that we’re heading toward a new paradigm for existing on the internet. It feels like the future will have much more digital surveillance.
Over the past two months, we have been leading a coalition to mitigate one of the most severe bugs in open source software found in recent memory, php2shell, found as part of our Patch the Planet initiative.

Towards securing the internet

My first programming language was PHP. I remember discovering the joy of creating software while learning to build in such a beginner-friendly and accessible language. That's one reason I've felt a

A legal tsunami is heading for government. They system is not built to handle the volume of input that agents are now able to produce. Without new infrastructure, our institutions will be under permanent DDOS attack. Who wants to build this?
A consequential choice will be made soon by government and companies as they are increasingly flooded with agentic AI inquiries that overcome the frictions that gated access (see the graphs - it has already started!) Two options: do you make services worse or better as a result?

I dunked on this guy for the original tweet so I think it’s important to recognize the apology and change of direction.
I built and posted a zombie game set on San Francisco streets. The setting and the way I promoted it showed poor judgment. Targeting people struggling with addiction or homelessness was never my intention. I’ve taken the game and promotional posts down, refunded all advertisers, and made a personal donation to treatment and recovery services by Delancey Street equal to the game’s total revenue.

We will analyze local data center moratoriums in class. What's up with them? Can they just do that? Can the state overrule them? What if Bernie Sanders gets his moratorium instead? Sign up below if you want to understand the regulatory future of AI.
I am organizing a class on the Politics and Policy of Superintelligence. You will learn who is in charge of AI regulation and what they’re up to. For tech and policy experts. Join the waitlist here: tally.so/r/w4KzyB

Daniel Golliher loves New York City more than anyone I've met, and his vision for it is better than any other I've heard. Rooting for him to find success revitalizing a pro-growth, optimistic vision for NYC politics.
If you want better parties, you have to make better parties. Enter: Maximum Republicans. New York needs a competitive political ecology, and two parties that compete to offer a strong, positive vision of governance. Here's my part of that grand project: maximumnewyork.com/p/maximum…

Part of what makes the universe so beautiful to me is that it’s surprisingly legible. Complex phenomena often turn out simpler to explain than it first seemed, and it looks like this holds for (artificial) intelligence as well. The Beautiful Lesson.
interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don't think we can solve alignment if we don't know what we're building. I think I have good news about it. I co-authored early work in mechanistic interpretability at OpenAI and came away pessimistic, because neural networks appeared to fold into arbitrary tangled knots. years later, I started openai's first large-scale automated interpretability project, finding about 2% of neurons legible with the primitive tools we had with modern agentic tools and a much closer look, the picture looks totally different. the vast majority in models up to trillions of parameters are legible, and their circuits beautiful. many famous examples of tangled neurons turned out to be misunderstood. The roadblocks I expected mostly aren't there. I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving. it may be a bitter lesson for interpretability: the simple thing, at absurd scale, works already-clean.goodfire.com/

the governance of California is significantly more important than the governance of most countries at this point. how they act on AI stuff will decide many things. of the major labs, perhaps only XAI is not technically headquartered in San Francisco

I believe that a new generation of institutional repairmen will be the difference between civilization and chaos. Do you hear the call, anon?
“Don’t tell me the U.S.A. went down the drain because of leftism, apostasy, pornography, polarization, etcetera, etcetera...All these things may have happened, but what finally tore it was that things stopped working and nobody wanted to be a repairman.” city-journal.org/article/wal…

Your local school board is a politician factory. Most members who go on to run for higher office win because of the political capital they accumulate on the board. The unfamiliar names on down ballot races become the headliners you’ll see next time around. Pay attention! From this great article on the SF School Board: sfschools101.substack.com/p/…

“Be kind to AIs not because they’re human, but because you are”
AIs probably aren’t sentient (and we should def stop building them in ways that create the illusion of it!) But it’s still bad to torture them because they’re a mirror to your own humanity, and thus it’s bad for YOU.

If only we had agentic, capable people who could do something about it. Like a young Steve Jobs even
It’s insane how fucked up things are on a governance front. It’s insane that we’re this in debt and this incapable of dealing with criminals and we started this moronic war with Iran. Fuck me man we have to be able to do better
