Vault proteins (aka “the sirens of cell biology”🧜‍♀️) are back in the headlines! But before we get carried away from the hype… Claude couldn’t crack their function, joining a long line of scientists lured into the mystery. Easy to spot, difficult to figure out…
Exclusive: Artificial intelligence has tackled a mystery that has flummoxed cell biologists for decades. Today, Anthropic reports its key #AI model, Claude, has helped unearth new clues about vaults—strange, barrellike structures, found by the thousands in animal and plant cells, that still have no known function despite scores of studies. In a blog post and related preprint, Anthropic describes how its small team of in-house biologists, guided by Claude, produced the first direct evidence that bacteria, viruses, and perhaps other simple microbes also make the odd structures. Cysteine is essential for life, and toxic in excess. Cells keep its abundance tightly controlled despite constant inputs from diet and metabolism. How cells directly sense cysteine and prevent its accumulation has been a longstanding mystery that our new paper addresses:

No words can express how I feel. Marta was one of the brightest lights in my scientific lineage - like a daughter. I love Marta because she was incredibly warm, generous, inspiring, a wonderful, thoughtful friend who I use as a role model for my students: “Be like Marta”.

Literally #FoodForThought! AI can write poetry, solve equations, and maybe even take over our jobs… But as long as computers can't smell freshly baked bread, savor a perfect pasta, or fall in love with the aroma of good coffee, I’d argue humanity still has the upper hand 🙃

An inspiring speech by the Nobel Prize Serge Haroche at the @ESET Science Award Gala on AI as a powerful tool for scientific discovery, particularly when combined with uniquely human qualities such as emotion, intuition, and our sensory perception of the world ❣️

Excited to share what we’ve been building with Chaperone! In our benchmark, Chaperone reduced token usage by 86%. We also went from hypothesis to sequences ready for wet-lab testing in just two weeks—yielding a 1.32 nM cortisol binder in the first experimental round!
