What’s the oldest thing in this picture? Hint: It’s not my grandpa. It’s something much, much older than him. I was gifted a 2,000-year-old Nabataean coin while I was hiking in Petra. My grandpa always loved collecting coins. So I brought it home for him.

@Yankees never would’ve entertained the thought of benching Babe Ruth in the playoffs, but… GenZ’s who have no historical perspective will tell you Shohei Ohtani is the GOAT because he’s the only baseball star they’ve ever watched.
Shohei Ohtani has 0 home runs and just 1 RBI since August 19th 🤯 That's 24 consecutive games without a home run, tied for the longest streak in his career in games with at least 1 plate appearance.

At some point, baseball has to get back to valuing ballplayers and not just numbers on a screen. Give me the Freddie Freemans, the Buster Poseys, Hunter Pences, Pablo Sandovals, Michael Youngs, Ian Kinslers of the world. Guys who just flat out know how to play the game. Everyone wants to talk launch angle and exit velo, but what happened to valuing a quality at bat?” The 9-pitch battle that might end in an out, but forces a pitcher to show everything he’s got. The guy who hits behind the runner, takes what’s given, or just refuses to give a pitcher an easy inning. Those at-bats might not look sexy in the box score, but they show up in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Some of these dudes could absolutely leave the yard too. That’s the point. They weren’t one-dimensional. Somewhere along the way, we confused measurable tools with knowing how to win baseball games. I’m not against analytics or hitting the ball hard, but there is an art to winning that you can’t fully measure. We need more guys who know how to play baseball, not just hitters, not just athletes, ballplayers. And I promise you, those dudes never go out of style

Hard to take a list of the Too 10 Greatest Return Specialists seriously when the missed one of, if not THE, greatest returns of all time. If you put Devin Hester above Desmond Howard, so be it. But only one of those guys holds a Super Bowl record.
Who was snubbed or missing?

Was today a bad outing for River Ryan? Yes, but 75% of his outs came on strikeouts. That’s impressive, at least.

Uh-uh. This is not OK. @JustinVerlander better hold him off on Saturday, because I’m not having this.
Max Scherzer may pitch again on short rest on Sunday for a chance at more strikeouts, per @MitchBannon Scherzer had 7 strikeouts today and is now 4 behind Justin Verlander, who pitches Saturday, for 8th on the all-time list.

It’s weird because the way this game went, with the Bills offense being completely unstoppable, you would’ve thought Josh Allen played better. But on paper anyways, Jared Goff actually out-dueled Allen. Goff also passed 40,000 career passing yards tonight.

How can a 2-time champ be looking for her 5th Grand Slam? I’m sure there are tennis fans who can explain this, but if @NYTSports is sending tennis updates to a general audience they should do a better job avoiding jargon. I expected more from the world’s top newspaper.

But I don’t think it did. Why is ⁦@TheAtlantic⁩ praising the NBA for cracking down on the Clippers when they’re letting off Kwai with a slap on the wrist? It was his camp that had all the power and pressured the Clips to break the rules. So his punishment should be steeper.

I remember the last time Los Angeles put together a team of aging superstars past their prime and lost the championship to Detroit. Do you?

Apparently, the @Tigers “coveted” River Ryan. He wasn’t just a toss in from the Dodgers, as if Detroit conceded Emmet Sheehan. He was the guy they wanted all along.
293
Even baseball executives thought the Tigers made a reasonable decision to trade with the Dodgers? But Brewers fans think there’s a conspiracy?!?
If you didn’t want to trade for Tarik Skubal, that’s fine. No hard feelings. But to act like there was some conspiracy, as if the Tigers owed you a favorable deal “for the good of baseball” is ludicrous.
33
I mean, how is this even possible? Zyhir Hope out-squats the entire NFL?? I was impressed when I heard Saquon could squat 700 pounds. But 850?? For a baseball player? That’s more than the biggest football players in today’s NFL. Only trails legendary Cowboys OL Larry Allen.

Wait, what? How was it not a conflict of interest for the Dodgers to operate on Tarik Skubal back when he was still playing for the Tigers?? I’m glad it worked out and all, but there are so many things unethical about that.
33
Pleasantly surprised to see such a respected journalist definitively offer his opinion: Dillion Dingler is “the best catcher in baseball.” Most would hedge and say “one of the” best. But @JeffPassan went for it and said what we’re all thinking.
63
This is why I’m rooting against the @Brewers!! I get that you didn’t want to trade Jesus Made, for obvious reasons, but you can’t hoard four of your top prospects and then be salty about it when the @Tigers take a different, better offer.
