ESTIC 2026 | Golden Rice, Biotechnology and the Role of Science in Society At ESTIC 2026, Sir Richard J. Roberts, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine (1993), highlighted the potential of biotechnology to address global challenges, including vitamin A deficiency and food security. Drawing on the example of Golden Rice, he discussed its potential to provide beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A, through a staple food. He highlighted the controversy surrounding the technology and the opposition it has faced, bringing attention to the broader implications of scientific innovation for public health, particularly in developing countries. ESTIC 2026 | The Role of Microscopy in Drug Discovery At ESTIC 2026, Prof. Joachim Frank, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry (2017) and Professor at @ColumbiaUniversity Irving Medical Center, delivered an insightful plenary talk on the role of microscopy in drug discovery. He highlighted how cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has transformed the study of molecular structures. Explaining the single-particle approach, he described how thousands of biological molecules are rapidly frozen in vitreous ice in random orientations, enabling electron microscopy to capture different views of these molecules. Prof. Frank explained how computational methods help determine molecular orientations, classify images and reconstruct detailed three-dimensional (3D) structures. This breakthrough has enabled scientists to investigate biological molecules at resolutions relevant to drug discovery. Reflecting on his contribution to this technology, he shared how it took more than a decade for the technique to reach fruition.
