Our team has tracked AI's progress in formal verification for over two years, waiting for a project like this to become practical. That time has now come! Formally verified end-to-end execution of a Linux process running an x86 binary statically linked against glibc.
x86 formal verification is coming! The (first?) published machine-checked proof of a security property for the end-to-end execution of a Linux process running an x86 binary statically linked against glibc. And we believe it scales! A joint research project with @zellic_io 🧵👇

What I do think is: you live in a world where machines are outperforming humans on mathematics problems that we’ve fought for years. Do you also think humans just nailed it down the line with our analysis of Module LWE and ECDLP and (already weirdly subexponential) factoring?

The only way to co-create subjects with intelligence and consciousness is the old-fashioned one: find a spouse and have babies. The mystery of the family, not toolmaking, is the means to co-creating and educating persons like ourselves. However sophisticated they may be, our tools will only ever be poor, partial imitations of persons.

SITUATION DETECTED: McDonald’s is using an AI “pricing engine” to analyze millions of daily transactions across 14,000 U.S. restaurants, estimate each area’s willingness to pay, and then generate what it calls “the optimal price” for every menu item at each store, per Reuters.

Twelve years after launching Universal SSL, Cloudflare is applying to become a certificate authority. By combining an established root, an ACME-first approach, and Merkle Tree Certificates, we are building a post-quantum CA for the open web. cfl.re/4AFIczO #BirthdayWeek

To all “independent evaluators” that may audit my lab (OpenAI), Anthropic, GDM, etc., PLEASE hire researchers with a wide spectrum of expertise and not just “AI safety”. Cybersecurity, bio, child safety, natsec, and various other domains should be well represented so that your audits cover a wider sample of harm/safety. I am quite worried the field is not diverse enough and needs to improve. I am very happy to see forward progress here and I applaud AI leadership across the frontier today. I look forward to working together.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training. People call me a designer but I am closer to the ham radio people by a huge margin than to designers. So naturally want to represent the interests of ham radio people. Ham radio people are interested in excelling at ham radio things. Therefore, they build things that help them with efficient ham radio operations. My objective is to take their philosophy and distill important aspects of what makes them efficient at ham radio operations. As, there is a considerable amount of natural gatekeeping from normies to entering the field, the prerequisite of understanding the magical world of RF keeps the football fans and such people out. Ham radio people are purely a group of high interest and low tolerance for nonsense. It is also extremely boring to sit on top of a mountain and scan for contacts in freezing cold and scorching sun, hence there is a great deal of peace and contemplation for sharpening their tools. It must be the finest stuff. It is the finest stuff. In a different universe, there would be a distinct tribe of ham radio people, a distinct culture with distinct etiquette and customs. They'd curtly communicate over CW in deliberate pulses of pure intent and information. A tribe entirely devoid of fancy coffee machines and mood boards. Their user interfaces match this philosophy of high grade minimalism and extreme straightforwardness. Football people think it is complex, for they do not understand the difference between organization and chaos in a more general sense. I pledge my arm to protect these people with constancy of my fervour and my might. They are my people and this is our flag. - 73, AD8K.
