Anthropic is saying that AI models could pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity. At the same time, Anthropic is planning the largest IPO in history, which would accelerate the development of this technology while leaving Americans holding the bag if the AI bubble bursts. I wrote to CEO Dario Amodei asking for real answers about the risks before they try and go public.

I can say with 100% certainty than none of our sources are corporate. There are major donors, small $ donors, labor unions and grassroots base-building orgs. It’s a massive tent and a civil society response to your industry’s election meddling.

Important piece by @noamscheiber on lawyer Beth Wilkinson and her career defending corporate interests and monopolies — from Paramount to Nexstar, and more. While Democrats might be inclined to defend Wilkinson for her defense of ABC, as @nhegde says, that doesn’t wash away a career spent helping monopolists consolidate markets. If Democrats are serious about being a party for working people, they have to take seriously what lawyers like her facilitate.

Microsoft is offering buyouts to 60,000(!) employees. Headcount and revenue growth is really starting to diverge at tech companies.

“We found that the AI Super PACs were more toxic with voters than Wall Street, cryptocurrency or AIPAC,” Charles Blaettler, political director of Guardrails Alliance (@GuardrailsNow), a PAC that combats AI spending that the advocacy group is part of, told Inc. “The influence of AI money on elections and politics sits at this nexus of the anxieties that people are feeling about AI, and this increased disgust people have around corruption and special interest money and politics.”

“In late spring 2020, a source I knew to be reliable called me with a story,” writes Matthew Cole. “The Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner’s phone and monitored him as he accessed a Dubai-based bank account. What was odd, the source said, was that the money in the account—hundreds of millions of dollars—had come from a bank in Azerbaijan. Most importantly, Kushner appeared to have transferred significant amounts of money from the Dubai account to other individuals, including a warlord, a mercenary and a one-time hit man. The story sounded preposterous, I told my source. And yet. Six months later, I found myself speaking with someone else about the UAE government and their use of mercenaries in conflicts around the Middle East and Africa when I asked, on a whim, whether they knew anything about Kushner and bank transfers from a UAE account. My acquaintance grew quiet. Then they replied, ‘Yes.’” Kushner’s lawyer denied the bank account existed.
