I go out of my way to write reviews that can't be taken out of context in film ads. Love that this one embraces my sentiments so faithfully. P.S. Make time to see TRAIN DREAMS!

Rob Reiner’s impact on cinema is immeasurable. Across decades, his work shaped how we laugh, how we love, and how we tell stories. From the razor-sharp satire of 'This Is Spinal Tap' to the aching nostalgia of 'Stand by Me,' the enduring romance of 'The Princess Bride' and 'When Harry Met Sally,' the suspense of 'Misery,' and the moral weight of 'A Few Good Men,' his films became cultural touchstones... endlessly quoted, revisited, and cherished across generations. Rob told stories with uncommon warmth and clarity, moving seamlessly between comedy, romance, drama, and suspense. His work received an Academy Award nomination for 'A Few Good Men' and helped create moments that have lived with audiences for decades. In his films, we continue to find laughter, love, and a reflection of ourselves.

For 11 years (from THIS IS SPINAL TAP to THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT), Rob Reiner had one of the most impressive runs in modern cinema — one banger after another, across multiple genres. But he was never nominated for best director. It's time to honor a mensch. variety.com/2025/film/opinio…

Inconceivable. 😢 #RobReinerRIP

My colleague @OwenGleiberman and I have named our top 10 films of 2025, with ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER & MARTY SUPREME appearing on both of our lists. (You'll find a double dose of DREAMS on mine: train dreams and sex-love dreams.) variety.com/lists/best-movie…

I guess that depends on what you think I think it means. Like UNCUT GEMS and GOOD TIME before it, MARTY SUPREME leaves you feeling spent — and I credit Chalamet's performance for much of that.

This feels both inevitable and unconscionable — that Iran censors its artists, sentences them for depicting reality and then punishes them for what would make any other country proud. If there's one thing IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT makes clear: Such a system cannot continue forever.

The best thing about Udo Kier (and it's not easy to pick) is the way the cult BLOOD FOR DRACULA star kept working till the end. Don't miss his cameo in THE SECRET AGENT, odd takes on Hitler in MY NEIGHBOR ADOLF & MRS. MEITLEMEIHR or his glorious SWAN SONG. variety.com/2024/film/featur…

Crossing paths with Jafar Panahi in yet another corner of the world (São Paulo this time). Smoking, of course.

Hey KPOP DEMON HUNTERS fans, I hosted a panel with the creators at the Animation Is Film Festival yesterday, where Maggie Kang & Chris Appelhans unpacked my favorite scene (Huntrix meets the Saja Boys) and spilled details about a song that was cut. variety.com/2025/film/news/k…

Where did the idea for shooting with two guns come from? John Woo walks me through the Hong Kong chapter of his career, now that @Shout_Studios has rescued and restored the movies he made for Golden Princess (A BETTER TOMORROW, THE KILLER & HARD BOILED). variety.com/2025/film/news/j…

A deep dive into why the threat of prison can't deter Iranian master Jafar Panahi, who defiantly goes on making movies, literally in spite of the consequences. His Palme d'Or-winning IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT is now in theaters. variety.com/2025/film/news/j…

RIP Drew Struzan, the poster artist whose paintings for STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES made those franchises even larger in our imaginations than they were on screen. Here's my roundup of his best work (featuring the original artwork): variety.com/lists/drew-struz…
