Congratulations to the Government of Canada on the Plan for a Stronger Canada — naming pharmaceuticals and biotech a strategic capability is exactly right. Research hospitals like @UHN are ready to contribute. @MarkJCarneycanada.ca/en/privy-council/s…
Our @Nature paper is out!
It's been known for a while that long-term dietary habits can affect how our immune system behaves. But what about much briefer changes in diet?
In mice, we found that even a few days of dietary change (think cheat days...or perhaps salad Sundays) at the onset of inflammation can profoundly alter disease severity and establish lasting inflammatory memory in tissues, even after the diet changes back.

This work was led by two extraordinarily dedicated and inexhaustible members of our lab: former graduate student @OwenJ457 and former technician John Tayeri. It was also an exercise in collaborative science as many labs @UCSF and @Stanford came together to bring this over the finish line - special thanks to @gardnerlabUCSF, @Molofsky_lab, @alexis_combes, @Treg_Mike. Deeply grateful to everyone who contributed!
For 22 years, Grand Cru has helped raise funds for life-saving care and groundbreaking research at UHN.
Thank you to the Ajmera family for their generous $35 million donation to establish the new Ajmera Transplant Institute. Together, we’re building a stronger health-care system and delivering world-class care for families across Ontario.
A $35M gift from the Ajmera family — $62M in total — establishes @UHN's Ajmera Transplant Institute. The largest known single-family donors to transplant medicine, globally. @uhnfoundation
Honoured to be invited by Dr. @SKeshavjee to speak with Latner Thoracic Research Labs on what decides whether skin regenerates or scars. Surgeons perturb tissue every day, giving us an opportunity to reduce the burden of fibrosis from lung transplant to skin function. Excited for ideas we’ll build together!
Folks, despite my best efforts, I regret to announce that I have published a paper in @Nature.
I can finally become one of those annoying PIs who tells trainees they don’t need a Nature paper to get a faculty job.

Excited to share our new review, “Macrophage Biology and Immunoregulation in Health and Disease”!
We highlight recent advances in macrophage biology and their roles in regulating immunity in health and disease.
Check it out! 👇

Discovery to market is Canada's gap — great science, too little early capital. @UHN joining the Genesys University Seed Fund as a hospital partner helps close it, turning lab discoveries into companies, jobs and patient impact at home.
Early signals for a selective new immunotherapy: invikafusp alfa activates Vβ6/Vβ10 T cells in treatment-resistant solid tumours. START-001, in Nature Medicine, co-led at Princess Margaret by Dr Lillian Siu. Early, small numbers — larger studies needed.
New paper alert!! Here we show in patient blood samples and animal models that Doxorubicin directly rewires CD8 T-cells into “matrix remodeling T-cells” or “mx-Tcells”allowing them to stiffen cardiac collagen directly through a Lox dependent mechanism

In mammals, there is no damage accumulation, there is only impaired regeneration capacity.
One of the most interesting findings was a population of Arg1-positive macrophages.
These macrophages were activated in regenerating #young tissues but their activation was suppressed in #aged regenerating tissues.
New preprint from the lab: "A Compact Regulatory Logic Governs Fibroblast Cell State Plasticity in Fibrosis". We integrated mouse and human epigenomic data to identify 280 fibroblast disease-activated enhancers, then perturbed them by CRISPRi CROP-seq. 🧵
