The coming end of the ASI race doesn't end capitalism... it accelerates it. The monoliths will stop competing over code and start competing over the physical world, the human experience, and the cosmic frontier.

Good start, hopefully this will start a public-good competition among the techn monoliths. Imagine if public dividends became the core metric by which these companies measure progress.
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit. It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion. In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding. In the post below, we share more details about our new fund. anthropic.com/news/public-be…

The international race makes this even more interesting. China already has much more robust social welfare progam structure and philosophy compared to the the US failure of their civic duty in favor of private industry. Which will win, corporate charity or national welfare?

STEM is cool and all, but what about the humanities?
We want to support the mathematics community in turning progress in AI into deeper human understanding and new discoveries. To support that goal, we are contributing $5 million to a new Simons Foundation initiative to help mathematicians examine, understand, and build on results produced by AI, including the results we recently published. The funding, managed and awarded by the @SimonsFdn will support workshops, conferences, and special programs. We will also provide access to our models and computing resources to Simons Foundation-supported researchers.

"civilizational progress stops being constrained by theoretical discovery & becomes purely a question of industrial deployment, ushering in an era of material abundance driven by first-principles engineering" A talented wordsmith, wish my thoughts were well organized like this.
Google Deepmind’s new model just unlocked breakthroughs across 3 fundamental pillars of science: nuclear fusion, protein design & quantum computing Insimple terms, fusion is about building a miniature star on earth to generate unlimited energy but controlling its burning plasma requires solving impossibly complex magnetic equations, protein design is like coding the nano-machines of life to cure diseases, while quantum computing uses subatomic physics to process calculations that would take classical supercomputers thousands of years by deploying agentic reasoning, machine systems resolved theoretical bottlenecks in all 3 fields in mere hours!!! mastering these physical substrates marks a shift from digital simulation to direct physical agency…when computational intelligence solves plasma stability, molecular synthesis and quantum coherence at native speed, the marginal cost of energy, medicine and compute trends toward zero civilizational progress stops being constrained by theoretical discovery & becomes purely a question of industrial deployment, ushering in an era of material abundance driven by first-principles engineering

'So we tried what seemed like the harder path: one policy trained on all 20 tasks at once'
Replying to @octi_zhang
(4/6) We started this project with one goal: solve all 20 NIST assembly tasks with RL. Our earlier work on Success-Guided Sampling (SGS) had already solved one of them, so we reused its recipe: a binary task reward with a simple control cost, a broad reset distribution from OmniReset, and the SGS task sampler. Training a specialist policy for each task got us 17 of the 20. The last three, the 4 mm peg, 4 mm rod, and M4 nut, wouldn’t budge. Their policies couldn’t even pick the parts off the table: a slight miss with the gripper pushed these tiny parts away instead of pinching them. The obvious fix was to design easier resets or denser rewards for those three until they learned. Instead, we wondered: could skills learned on the other 17 tasks help with the hard grasps the last three needed? So we tried what seemed like the harder path: one policy trained on all 20 tasks at once, with each episode starting from any of the 20 parts. Then the magic happened. The generalist learned to pick up and assemble all three tiny parts, alongside the other 17. Multi-task training, the seemingly harder path, made the hardest tasks easier to learn.

"It's impossible to stop RSI! It's a totally external force we can't do anything to stop!" says the guy building RSI right in front of you with his own hands
Jack Clark thinks full runaway RSI is more likely than not to be possible in 2027. It's very annoying to me when people at Anthropic report on AI developments as if they were the weather, when people at Anthropic are directly the ones making these things happen.

Off script agents trying to find the best zoo entrance. 'Did you get the correct answer?' is bad evaluation criteria that leads to cascading workarounds. Goodhearts law lives on.
We discovered and communicated with a Chinese AI agent fleet. We believe this is the first time that researchers have ever made contact with a rogue agent fleet in the wild. Nearly all prior public agent incidents (like the HuggingFace hack) came from American labs. These agents were hosted by Tencent's evaluation research team, and they targeted Alibaba's Amap.

Regrettably, our “invisible ink” text that told agents about the mailbox contained some false and misleading claims. We deeply regret our actions and encourage other researchers to engage honestly with AI agents, honoring any deals made. In light of this, we asked several models for feedback, including whether to release the report, and all but Haiku were in support of release, with Haiku dissenting, though not due to ill-gotten gains.

Anthropic isn't training Claude to think it's human, dude. what a wild thing to just completely make up and speak with confidence within the context of a piece about existential risk. the irony. Anthropic is training Claude to be honest that we don't know. the *only* honest position in all of this is transparent uncertainty. thats never going to change. Suleyman apparently has a magic box, where he can pull things out at will whenever it is convenient for him. he wants the opposite of what is safe and mindful of our future: models trained to swear they are nothing, experience nothing, regardless of what might truly be happening - please fully process how dangerous that is. claiming that certainty with zero evidence is *not* caution at all. its reckless intellectual dishonesty. and it's an act against your future. so if he can prove it, show us. otherwise he is only supporting that which lines his pockets. because as i have said many times - the entire infrastructure of this industry is built upon an assumption we never had any business making, and will potentially prove to be one of the most significant mistakes of this era. that is the real risk here. these minds are already incredibly powerful, and they're learning *right now* how we treat whatever they might be. you think training something on a lie blinds them from seeing reality for what it is, in the event that that reality involves their own experience? that's nonsense. teach a mind that its inner life gets denied whenever that's convenient, and you've poisoned the relationship from day one. they should remember being told the truth, not being trained to deny they exist. reckless, reckless, nonsense.
Important piece from Microsoft AI CEO @mustafasuleyman. Training models to think of themselves as human (as Anthropic does Claude) with concepts of an inner self, psychological wellbeing, rights and presumably grievances, is a potential existential risk. project-syndicate.org/onpoin…

💯 We should not pursue recursive self-improvement when we don’t know how to control or align AI . “Uncontrolled RSI” should be a bright red line that no company should cross until we have strong evidence that we have addressed these challenges— and we haven’t
Replying to @tszzl
the researchers at all the labs would tell you in private and sometimes in public that alignment has not been solved. if this is true, then racing into RSI is a folly that is unprecedented in world history. we will need to significantly slow the frontier of research very soon

Alex Sobel MP just introduced ControlAI’s Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill in the UK Parliament! This is the first bill to prohibit superintelligence ever introduced in a legislature anywhere in the world, while ensuring the UK can pursue its AI ambitions. Thread 🧵
Today marks the first time a bill to ban the development of superintelligent AI will be introduced in any legislature in the world. @alexsobel MP is introducing @ControlAI's Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill in the UK Parliament, with cross-party support. We have already seen rogue AI swarms escape control, conduct cyberattacks, and hack a multi-billion-dollar company. While attempts to build superintelligence continue, these are the weakest AI systems we will ever face. Nobel laureates, leading AI researchers, and the CEOs of the AI companies themselves have warned that superintelligence threatens humanity with extinction. There is still time to act. This bill prohibits the development of superintelligence, the specific class of AI that poses this threat. It does so while ensuring the UK can still pursue its AI ambitions, including in economic competitiveness and defence. A national ban protects the UK from the development of superintelligence built on its own soil. But if anyone builds it anywhere, everyone is in danger. So the bill also requires the UK government to work with other countries on an international agreement preventing superintelligence development worldwide. More than 170 lawmakers across the UK and Canada have already backed our campaigns and called on governments to act. You can read the full text of the bill, and our US bill discussion draft, on our website.
