That’s completely incorrect. New geothermal wells access new rock.

I think you’ve taken the wrong concluding from your analysis. It is pretty remarkable that your numbers show building the US nuclear fleet equivalent amount of electricity every two years while staying well within the historic range of active rigs.

Also hitting 60,000 MW/year would mean building the equivalent of the entire US nuclear fleet in less than 2 years. That’s incredible scale for something that would use less than a quarter of the spare rig capacity in the US.

DOE/IEA modeling shows the pace of new geothermal installs needing to jump from ~300 MW a year today to 30,000-60,000 MW a year at the 2030-2050 buildout's peak. Run that through Fervo's own per-rig productivity.

Rig counts were ~2000 barely a decade ago. It’s very doable to scale to a small fraction of that. Also look at shale productivity over time. Using a 2026 rig-year productivity metric for drilling 20 years from now is wildly conservative. Rigs aren’t going to be the constraint.

Okay thank you, @JaneAFlegal. Let's talk BAAJA & geothermal. If you want clean, affordable, baseload power and you want it fast, enhanced geothermal is your technology. If you want to unlock the Geothermal Decade even faster, BAAJA is your bill. 🧵
To a degree people are not yet appreciating, the geothermal provisions in BAAJA may be among the highest impact for accelerating global decarbonization.

Huge kudos to the 4 senators and the White House for completing negotiations on energy permitting reform. The bill has been so difficult because the 4 senators came with very different priorities and constituencies. Capito (R-WV): pipelines and permitting certainty Whitehouse (D-RI): reducing emissions Lee (R-UT): removing regulatory barriers and protecting states' rights Heinrich (D-NM): protecting lands; transmission and renewables They came to the table because the current system fails on all four sets of priorities. But permitting reform is not zero sum. This deal advances all of them. It's good for America and the American people.

You could do this a lot more cost effectively and lower risk with geothermal. Government funding for nuclear is already so vast event universities with massive endowments would be a drop in the bucket. Not much real impact. But geothermal…
