The UCSF Transplant Program is a leader in adult and pediatric transplants for liver, kidney, and pancreas, attracting patients nationally & internationally.
‼️Congrats to Dr. James Gardner (@gardnerlabUCSF), whose project “The VIABLE Core” received $250K from @UCSF’s Sandler Program for Breakthrough Biomedical Research + @UCSF Diabetes Center. The top-ranked proposal will establish a new multi-organ perfusion platform 👏
‼️Back with Great news: @UCSFTransplant Surgeon Dr. James Gardner + the @gardnerlabUCSF have received an NCI R37 MERIT award—up to $4.7M—to study novel immune cells (eTACs) + their role in cancer immune evasion. Huge thanks to our collaborators + team‼️#CancerResearch#science
Achieving and maintaining harmony between the liver and the host immune system is critical for liver graft health. Dr. @SandyFeng8, Vice-Chair of Research has earned a $7.2M @NIAIDNews grant to decode the tipping point between calm and crisis in children with liver transplants‼️
‼️Big congrats to @gardnerlabUCSF on their new @JExpMed paper showing how immune cells called eTACs promote tolerance to food antigens—key for allergies, diabetes, and transplants - from the lab that discovered and pioneered the study of eTACs👉doi.org/10.1084/jem.20250573
‼️UCSF team led by Holger Willenbring and Garrett Roll used machine perfusion of non-transplantable human livers to inform AAV liver gene therapy, enabling a new era where AAV capsid choice is tailored to disease-specific needs. nature.com/articles/s41587-0…

Thrilled to see the release of this work on gene expression-based molecular scoring of pancreas transplant rejection in @amjtransplant! Congratulations to the @UCSFSurgery@UCSFTransplant team for their hard work and dedication in bringing this to fruition bit.ly/3ZOXwKm
ALT Common and unique gene transcripts specific to rejection severity and biological processes involved with rejection. A supervised clustering lists 58 and 37 genes significantly changed in ACR2 (A) and ACR3 (B), 28 genes overlapped as shown in VennDiagram (C). The common genes significantly changed in ACR grades 2 and 3 were enriched in biological processes such as the immune system process (FDR 1.47E-16) and response to cytokine (FDR 4.67E-16).
Interesting analysis from @UCSF Transplant Outcomes Research Center on impact of DI on observed creatinine level in decreased kidney donors @UCSFTransplant@UCSFDOM
🎉Dr. James Gardner has received the prestigious W.M. Keck Foundation Award for 1.3M for his research on extrathymic Aire-expressing cells, potentially impacting a range of conditions from type 1 diabetes to cancer immunotherapy to organ transplantation👉diabetes.ucsf.edu/node/1741🌟
‼️Dr. Charles "Chuck" Rickert, under the mentorship of Drs. James Gardner & Mark Anderson received the 2024 $100k ImmunoX Hellman Family Award for his project: "Precision Mapping of the Transplant Recipient Antibody Landscape Using Phage-Display Immunosuppression Sequencing."👏👏
‼️Dr. Garrett Roll, working w/ Dr. Tara Sigdel, have been awarded a $50,000 Pilot/Feasibility Grant from @UCSFLiverCenter for his project titled "Study of Molecular Markers of Early Allograft Dysfunction in Liver Transplantation," which will support his innovative research👏👏
‼️Congratulations to @gardnerlabUCSF and @ScharschmidtLab on their 250K Kenneth Rainin Foundation Innovator Award, “Pioneering single-cell intracellular metagenomics” - marking an exciting collaboration between @UCSF Dermatology and @UCSFSurgery, facilitated through @immunox🥳🥳
‼️We are happy to announce that Dr. Charles “Chuck” Rickert, currently an instructor in our Department, will be stepping into a new role soon as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery within our @UCSFTransplant Surgery Division starting on July 1st, 2024 🥳🥳
‼️Monday, Nov 13th, in Boston, @UCSFTransplant & @UCSFLiverCenter researcher, Dr. Holger Willenbring, takes the stage at AASLD Liver Meeting @AASLDtweets to give the Hans Popper State-of-the-Art Lecture, sharing his vision on the "Next Generation Human Liver Gene Therapy"👇
‼️Today, the National Academy of Medicine unveiled its roster of new members. We are thrilled to share that Dr. Sandy Feng @SandyFeng8, our Vice-Chair of Research & @UCSFTransplant Surgeon, is one of the 100 elected as new members of @theNAMedicine Class of 2023🥳🥳👏
