There is a fundamental vibratory hum or pulse to reality that we notice when we look very closely. The universe appears to flicker in and out of existence like the wings of a rainbow colored butterfly. The Buddhists call this Udayabbaya - the unceasing arising and passing away of phenomena. We train our concentration and perceptual sensitivity in part to perceive it more clearly. In Non-Dual Shaiva Tantra they call it spanda: the dynamic throbbing of consciousness. The tantrikas use the metaphor of God’s eyes opening and closing in each moment to manifest and withdraw the universe. Their language calls to mind the image of God’s REM conjuring the dream we call reality. Recently, scientific papers like the one QTd below are finding correlations to this phenomena in brain activity. The brain seeming to flicker between processing conscious and unconscious content at a rate of ~15 Hz (15 times per second). Like a fractal microcosm of the universe, we call forth our own dream of reality in this vibratory trance. This is why seeing this process more clearly is so important to the process of waking up from the dream. In some Buddhist systems we seek to become so sensitive to these arisings and passings aways that we start to see between their cracks. In doing so, we experience “bhanga” - the dissolution of our mind’s dream of a stable, continuous reality. But in the gaps between consciousness, we find not a blank nothingness but a reality beyond words. Something we might call luminous, empty and deeply blissful but of course is really none of these things because these are all words. Likewise, the tantric Shaivites seek to see in between the gaps between moments of perception in order - in their more theological language - to experience the everpresent luminosity of God (Shiva). Whether you are a Buddhist, a Shaivite, an atheist or something else entirely, learning to sensitize to the fundamentally vibratory nature of reality is one of the most powerful spiritual skills you can learn in this life. To peer between the cracks of existence. To find the numinous, luminous truths that wait for us there. To wake up from this flickering trance of a dream that we call reality.
1/ We discovered something totally unexpected about the neural structure of consciousness that overturns decades of thinking on its biological basis and brings us significantly closer to the recipe for generating conscious awareness. “The world is a museum of passion projects”
As you become an adult, you realize that things around you weren't just always there; people made them happen. But only recently have I started to internalize how much tenacity *everything* requires. That hotel, that park, that railway. The world is a museum of passion projects.

Two things to remember if you don't like your life right now... 1. "Tolerating" always becomes resentment, and resentment kills joy. 2. Overcoming hard things is actually correlated to happiness. Pursuing what you really want may seem hard, but doing it will make you happier.

"If—" is a poem by English poet Rudyard Kipling If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same: If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss: If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And—which is more—you'll be a Man, my son!

We fill our days mostly on things that are trivial next to what we ultimately care about. We know, deep down, however, that in the noise of it all, health is easily forgotten until it’s the only thing that matters. We spend a fraction of our lives truly sober to the preciousness of life. We feel it when someone we love dies, when a child is born, when we come close to death ourselves, or when a diagnosis marks our limit. In those moments, we are sobered, and the rarity of it all becomes self evident. Imagine the existence we’d build together if that clarity didn’t fade. I wish all of you the very best. Care for yourself, care for others, care for the planet and care for our animal friends. Care for life as it’s the most precious gift there is.

A reminder from Atomic Habits by James Clear: “It doesn't make sense to continue wanting something if you're not willing to do what it takes to get it. If you don't want to live the lifestyle, then release yourself from the desire. To crave the result but not the process is to guarantee disappointment.”

A reminder to feel optimistic about the future of tech!
this is actually insane > be tech guy in australia > adopt cancer riddled rescue dog, months to live > not_going_to_give_you_up.mp4 > pay $3,000 to sequence her tumor DNA > feed it to ChatGPT and AlphaFold > zero background in biology > identify mutated proteins, match them to drug targets > design a custom mRNA cancer vaccine from scratch > genomics professor is “gobsmacked” that some puppy lover did this on his own > need ethics approval to administer it > red tape takes longer than designing the vaccine > 3 months, finally approved > drive 10 hours to get rosie her first injection > tumor halves > coat gets glossy again > dog is alive and happy > professor: “if we can do this for a dog, why aren’t we rolling this out to humans?” one man with a chatbot, and $3,000 just outperformed the entire pharmaceutical discovery pipeline. we are going to cure so many diseases. I dont think people realize how good things are going to get

आलयविज्ञान - Ālayavijñāna the storehouse consciousness What we don’t feel doesn’t disappear, it just gets stored somewhere
my experience on "the path" or whatever so far is there's an incredible, shocking amount of karma stored in the body from unfelt emotions over what has been a kind of pretty overall great life. its wild how much the body stored. going through the storehouse is exponential with time, and can be done with almost no suffering, but lots and lots of feeling at least thousands of hours total just letting contractions untense, on the hour long zoomed in view it feels like maybe this is all procedurally generated and fake but over the year to year view it's super obvious in a daily felt experience way that the total storehouse is decreasing, which is also what all the books since forever say is how it works
